The Red Sox could secure their second consecutive postseason berth on Saturday.
After defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 in Friday night’s series opener at Tropicana Field, the Boston Red Sox' magic number to clinch a postseason berth now sits at two. This gives them a chance to clinch their first consecutive postseason appearances since 2016-2018 (three straight appearances).
Here’s what you need to know about their clinching scenarios:
As noted by MLB.com’s Ian Browne, there are two paths for Boston to clinch on Saturday, both of which include a Red Sox victory over the Rays. Let’s break them down:
Scenario 1:
The Red Sox' first clinching scenario is comfortably their easiest path. A Red Sox win over the Rays, paired with a Toronto Blue Jays win over the Texas Rangers, and the Red Sox are in.
Texas thumped Toronto 7-1 on Friday to pull within one game of the Chicago White Sox for the final wild card spot. The two sides will be back at it at 7:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, with Toronto’s big-ticket trade deadline acquisition Jose Soriano looking to keep their playoff hopes alive opposite righty Cal Quantrill for Texas.

Because Texas is tied with the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West, things get a little more complicated if Texas beats Toronto. A Rangers win would mean they jump Houston for the AL West lead, making the Astros the first team out of the third wild card spot. Meaning a Red Sox win, paired with an Astros loss to the Atlanta Braves, would secure Boston its playoff spot. However, if both Texas and Houston win, the celebrations will have to wait, as the lowest the magic number can go is one.
Hayden Wesneski will start for Houston as they look to stave off Texas’ late divisional push, opposite Grant Holmes for Atlanta.
Of course, both scenarios depend on a Boston victory, and the Red Sox will certainly have their work cut out against a Rays team looking to stave off a late push for the AL East crown by the New York Yankees. Trade deadline acquisition Freddy Peralta (9-11, 4.67) gets the start for the Rays, and while his overall numbers are unimpressive, the veteran right-hander has allowed only two earned runs across three starts spanning 17 innings in September. The Red Sox have not yet named a starter, though Brayan Bello is expected to play a major role in the pitching plan either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever.
