The hits keep on coming for the Boston Red Sox as their star outfielder exited Monday's win in Detroit with an apparent wrist injury
The Boston Red Sox rallied for their largest comeback win of the season on Monday night with a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. However, Boston was unable to escape the injury bug in the win as star outfielder Roman Anthony exited the game with a right-hand injury.
The injury occurred in Anthony's first at-bat in the first inning. He fought off a 1-0 sinker, ripping it foul into the third base stands and was seen flexing his right hand/wrist after the swing. After a lengthy conversation with interim manager Chad Tracy and head trainer Brandon Henry, Anthony remained in the game, eventually grounding out to second base and taking his place in left field in the home half of the first. It wasn't until the Red Sox took the field in the second inning that Anthony was replaced by Masataka Yoshida in left field. The team later dubbed the injury "right wrist discomfort."
"Just took a swing and it didn't feel good," Anthony said of the injury, "I've never really dealt with something like this, never even had any pain in my hand before, so we'll see what happens," he continued.
"Just some discomfort in the top of his hand...imaging tonight was negative, but we are gonna send him back to Boston to see our hand specialist just to look at it and make sure," Tracy told reporters after the win. When asked if he was confident Anthony's injury would not require a trip to the injured list, Tracy said: "I'm hopeful, but it's really hard to say until he sees the specialist."
This marks the third time the 21-year-old has been injured in his brief major league career, missing the final month of the regular season and playoffs in 2025 due to an oblique strain, along with a tight back that kept him out of the lineup for four games in late April. "It's not a good feeling, I don't want to be in this situation, nobody ever wants to be hurt," Anthony said of the injuries. "That's just the way it's gone, just got to deal with it, get through it, and get back out there as soon as I can," he continued.

In other Red Sox injury news
Ahead of Monday night's win, the Red Sox placed left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list with cervical spasms. Lefty reliever Alec Gamboa was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take Coulombe's spot on the active roster. To make room on the 40-man roster for Gamboa, Boston transferred rehabbing starter Patrick Sandoval to the 60-day injured list.
According to MLB.com's Ian Browne, starter Sonny Gray threw a bullpen in Detroit before Monday's win, which went well. According to Browne, Tracy has yet to speak with the veteran starter or Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow. Gray is eligible to come off the injured list on Wednesday.
The Red Sox will look to take the series from the Tigers in the second game of the three-game set in Detroit. First pitch from Comerica Park set for 6:40 p.m. ET.
