The Red Sox are on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since 2021, and though his season hasn't been as loud as it was in 2024, Duran is a major reason why.

Despite losing on Thursday night, the Boston Red Sox are on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time since 2021. With three games to play in the regular season, the Red Sox need one win, or one Houston Astros loss to punch their ticket. They are currently in the No. 2 wild card position at 87-72.

Assuming the Red Sox do finish the job and get to the playoffs, outfielder Jarren Duran will have been a big reason why. The speedster has put together another historic season at the plate, as noted by @SoxNotes on social media:

Jarren Duran is the first player in MLB history to record multiple seasons with 40+ doubles, 10+ triples, 15+ HR, and 20+ stolen bases.

The 29-year-old California native is hitting .257 with 16 home runs, 82 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, 40 doubles and 13 triples. The 13 triples lead the American League for the second straight season.

His season hasn't been as loud as 2024, when he hit .285 and won MVP of the All-Star Game, but he's still making the organization look good for not trading him, which there was discussion about at the trade deadline.

Given the presence and emergence of Roman Anthony, there is still a chance of a move in the offseason, but Duran is clearly a valuable piece of the organization.

He's under team control through 2028.

A five-year veteran, he's a former seventh-round pick of the Red Sox out of Long Beach State.

    Up next

The Red Sox will take on the Detroit Tigers on Friday night in a game that has meaning to both teams, as Detroit is tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central lead. Kyle Harrison will take the ball for Boston. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants in the Rafael Devers trade, Harrison is 1-1 with a 3.58 ERA.

He'll be opposed by All-Star Casey Mize, who is 14-6 with a 3.91 ERA.
