Speaking on "Foul Territory TV" on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal made the comments about Bregman returning to Boston.

Speaking on "Foul Territory TV" on Wednesday afternoon, MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said he expects free agent Alex Bregman to be back with the Boston Red Sox this offseason.

"I expect him to be back in Boston. In free agency, when you say something like this, you're playing with fire, because in free agency, things happen that you never expect. This is true of all transactions. None of these trades that have happened so far were anticipated by anyone and free agency can be wild. But with Bregman, it was such a good fit. He was so perfect ofr them. Now, he's going to be perfect in the estimation of other clubs on their rosters as well, and all it takes is one, to obviously, take him away but he is really the right guy for the Red Sox."

    The Bregman file

A 10-year veteran of the Houston Astros and Red Sox, Bregman made quite the impact on the Boston clubhouse in 2025. Though he only played 114 games because of a leg injury, he hit .273 with 18 homers, 62 RBIs and a .360 on-base percentage. He helped lead the Red Sox to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, where they were beaten by the New York Yankees in three games in the wild card series.

Lifetime, Bregman is a .272 hitter with 209 home runs. He is a three-time All-Star, a Gold Glover, a Silver Slugger and a two-time World Series champion.

He's 31 years old and will turn 32 in March of 2026.

    Why he fits

Well, for starters, he's productive. Second, he brings a winning history and a winning pedigree. Third, he's already been with the Red Sox and shown an ability to help build and facilitate the culture of Alex Cora's clubhouse.

Fourth, his pull-heavy swing is tailor-made for the Green Monster in left field.

    The questions

Well, the main question is how how much money he wants, and at what point it no longer becomes worth it for the Red Sox to engage in conversation with him and his representation.

Boston has rookie Marcelo Mayer already major-league ready, and they could just plug-and-play him at third base if they don't want to break the bank on Bregman. Furthermore, they could look at another veteran like Eugenio Suarez, who will be significantly cheaper over far less years than Bregman will be.
