The Red Sox selected the contract of left-hander Raymond Burgos to provide relief to a taxed bullpen.
Ahead of Friday night’s series opener against the Athletics, the Boston Red Sox made a move with their pitching staff, selecting left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester. To make room on the active roster, right-handed reliever Greg Weissert was optioned to Triple-A.
The move to add Burgos to the major league roster comes in the wake of Thursday night’s 13-inning marathon in which interim manager Chad Tracy used all eight of his bullpen arms to cover the final 10 innings after starter Ranger Suarez completed only three innings.
The Red Sox beat the White Sox 12-11.
About Burgos
The 27-year-old lefty was signed by Boston on May 7 after beginning the 2026 season with Guerreros de Oaxaca of the Mexican League. After signing with the Red Sox, Burgos reported to Worcester, where he’s made 15 appearances (14 starts). In those 15 appearances, he has posted a 5.63 ERA in 64 innings, while opponents have hit .305 against him.
Burgos was initially drafted in the 18th round of the 2016 draft by Cleveland, but is now with his third organization, spending time in the San Francisco Giants system prior to joining the Mexican League ahead of the 2026 season.
The 27-year-old has made one major league appearance, allowing one run on three hits in an inning of work in 2024 with the Giants. Over eight minor league seasons, he has posted a 3.73 ERA in 359.1 innings.

He’ll likely provide length to a Red Sox pitching staff that has rookies Payton Tolle and Jake Bennett slated to start the first two games of their three-game set with the Athletics, followed by a planned bullpen game for Sunday’s series finale.
About Weissert
It’s been an up-and-down season for the 31-year-old right-hander. In 45.1 innings, Weissert has posted a 3.97 ERA; however, he’s been better of late, with a 3.30 ERA over his last 30 innings.

After throwing 34 pitches in Thursday’s win, Weissert became a victim of the numbers game as Boston looked to provide relief to the bullpen. He’ll have to remain in Triple-A for at least 10 days before being recalled unless there is an injury.

Boston will look to make it nine straight wins on Friday night as they welcome the Athletics to Fenway Park. Payton Tolle (6-6, 3.30 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite Jack Perkins (2-7, 6.72 ERA) for the A’s. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET
