As the Boston Red Sox have surged to a 7-3 record in their last 10 games, Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have been out on a rehab assignment, working their way back from lengthy stays on the injured list. As the trio works their way back to the big league lineup, when can fans expect them back in a Red Sox uniform? 

Despite Anthony, Story and Kiner-Falefa working their way back, their positions have been filled by an unsuspecting cast of role players performing well, making it an incredibly difficult decision on who should lose their place on the active roster, especially as both Story and Kiner-Falefa have struggled to produce in Triple-A thus far. 

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow joined WEEI’s ‘The Greg Hill Show’ on Thursday morning and gave some insight into how the team may handle their returns. 

“They're [Anthony, Story and Kiner-Falefa] all getting very close to returning,” Breslow said. “At some point in the rehab process you shift from a medical perspective to a baseball perspective, and the conversations now aren't about how do you feel and how are you recovering, and become how does your swing feel and how's your timetable... I think we're getting there,” he continued. 

All three of Anthony, Story and Kiner-Falefa have signaled that they are getting more comfortable back in game action when speaking with reporters in Worcester. However, only Anthony’s production has signaled he may be ready for a return to the big leagues. 

The former No. 1 overall prospect in the sport announced his presence in Worcester the same way he did in Portland a week prior, launching a mammoth home run in Tuesday’s WooSox win. Overall, Anthony has gone 5-for-19 with two home runs, six RBI and a double, while consistently making hard contact and good swing decisions. 

Things haven’t been as pretty for the veteran shortstop in Triple-A as he’s struggled mightily in eight games, hitting just .138/.167/.138/.305 while striking out 34.4 percent of the time. Story’s struggles make it particularly difficult for the Red Sox to bring him back to the major league roster. The pair of utility men Nick Sogard and Andruw Monasterio have performed well in Story’s stead.

Like Story, the veteran utility man has struggled to find his footing after missing over two months with a stress reaction in the left forearm. Going just 2-for-18 in six games with Worcester. However, since the 31-year-old primarily serves as a bench utility man, the team could choose to wait until rosters expand on Sept. 1 to bring Kiner-Falefa back, something he has already said he was comfortable with the team doing. 

As the Red Sox get set to open a crucial four-game set in the Bronx with the Yankees, Anthony could return as soon as Friday’s series opener. As far as Story and Kiner-Falefa are concerned, they may be waiting at least until Sept. 1 unless they prove they are capable of performing at a major league level in the meantime. 

The Red Sox will have a chance to pass the Yankees in the standings as they open up a four-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium. Patrick Sandoval (1-2, 4.54 ERA) will get the start for Boston opposite American League Cy Young Award favorite Cam Schlittler (11-6, 2.16 ERA) for New York. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET.
