The Red Sox need a right-hander who can hit left-handed pitching.

We've talked about this a lot over the last several months, but it bears repeating again as spring training nears: The Boston Red Sox roster, as currently constructed, is clunky.

The Red Sox have five outfielders (Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Roman Anthony and Masataka Yoshida) for three outfield spots and the designated hitter.

Four of those five are left-handed, and the team hasn't found a replacement for the Rob Refsnyder "lefty masher" role. The team doesn't know if it wants to play Kristian Campbell at second base, start him in Triple-A or change his position again, and we've heard rumors that Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton could end up in a platoon at second base.

Allow me to think outside the box and solve some of the Red Sox' issues in one move: Signing Miguel Andjuar. Follow along.

About Andujar

About to turn 31 years old, Andujar is a nine-year veteran of the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Athletics and Cincinnati Reds. He burst onto the scene with the 2018 Yankees, hitting 27 homers and driving in 92, but then injuries rattled him for the next several years. He played 75 games for the 2024 Athletics before hitting .318 in 94 games for the 2025 A's and the Reds. He had 10 home runs, 44 RBIs and a .352 on-base percentage.

He made 32 appearances at third base, 32 in the outfield, 28 at DH and a handful at first base. He hit .389 against lefties in 93 plate appearances.

Why he'd fit for the Red Sox

Well, he'd take over in the Refsynder role, but he'd provide even more versatility. If the team want to use Gonzalez at second against lefties, Andujar could play third, keeping two of the left-handed outfielders in the lineup.

If they want to use Gonzalez at second, Marcelo Mayer can stay at third and Andujar can spell one of the lefty outfielders.

The question at hand

There's only so many roster spots available and the Red Sox are already bumping up against their limits.

Let's see: A 26-man roster, 13 of which are pitchers. That leaves 13 position players....

C: Carlos Narvaez

1B: Willson Contreras

2B: ?

SS: Trevor Story

3B: Marcelo Mayer

OF1: Roman Anthony

OF2: Jarren Duran

OF3: Wilyer Abreu

OF4/DH: Ceddanne Rafaela

Bench 1: Connor Wong

Bench 2: Masataka Yoshida

Bench 3:

Bench 4:

As of now, there's really only three open roster spots on this team. Gonzalez, Campbell and Hamilton are all battling for them, as are Nate Eaton, Triston Casas and Nick Sogard. There's room for Andujar, but it comes at a cost of someone else this team likes.
