The Red Sox third baseman has been one of the team's best hitters in June.
Update 6:10 p.m. ET. - Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters after the game that Durbin suffered a pinky subluxation. "We'll just see how he is soreness wise, but I think we might have dodged a bullet there," Tracy said.
Boston Red Sox third baseman Caleb Durbin exited Wednesday afternoon's series finale in Colorado with an apparent injury. Here's what we know:
What happened?
The injury occurred in the top half of the second inning with the Red Sox leading the Rockies, 2-0. Centerfielder Ceddanne Rafaela led off the top of the second with a double to put the Red Sox in immediate position to extend their lead to three. After right fielder Wilyer Abreu lined out to center and first baseman Willson Contreras grounded out to short, moving Rafaela over to third, it was up to Durbin to cash in on the Red Sox' opportunity.
The 26-year-old third baseman chased a 2-1 change-up down and away, grounding it softly to Colorado first baseman TJ Rumfield, who tossed it to Rockies starter Kyle Freeland to retire the side. However, Durbin dove headfirst into the base in an attempt to beat the throw.
When the Red Sox took the field in the bottom half of the inning, Durbin was replaced by shortstop Marcelo Mayer, moving second baseman Anthony Seigler to third, and Andruw Monasterio, who began the game at short, over to second.
A loss the Red Sox lineup cannot afford
After a brutal start to the season where Durbin was one of the worst hitters in baseball, the 26-year-old has turned a corner in recent weeks, becoming one of the lone bright spots in the struggling Boston lineup.
Entering Wednesday afternoon's series finale, Durbin was hitting .317/.343/.587/.930 with four home runs, eight RBI, and 10 runs scored, leading all qualified Red Sox hitters in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage in the month of June. His wRC+ of 148 ranks 40th among 173 qualified hitters in the month.
Overall, the Red Sox lineup has struggled mightily in the month, ranking in the bottom 10 in baseball in batting average (.231, 24th), on-base percentage (.290, 27th), slugging percentage (.394, 23rd), and runs scored (7-, T-27th).
Not only has Durbin become the hitter the Boston front office dreamt of when they acquired him in an offseason deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, but he has also been one of the best defensive third basemen in the sport. His defensive runs saved of seven is tied for the second-highest mark among all players at the hot corner, while his outs-above-average and fielding run value of two both rank in the top 10.
We won't know more about Durbin's injury until interim manager Chad Tracy meets with the media following the game, but the Red Sox offense can not afford a prolonged absence from one of its hottest hitters.
