Not much has gone right for the Boston Red Sox in 2026, as the team finds itself at 29-43 and in distant last place in the American League East, with one of the worst offenses in the sport. However, there is at least one bright spot as center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela has taken his offensive production to a whole new level, becoming a budding star. 

The 25-year-old Rafaela had already cemented himself as one of the best defensive players in the sport in his first two full seasons, ranking second among all fielders in defensive runs saved and top 10 in both outs above average and fielding run value in nearly 1800 innings in center en route to back-to-back gold gloves at the position. 

However, chase and whiff rates in the bottom 10 percent of the league kept him from becoming anything more than a below league-average bat, posting a wRC+ of 81 and 91 in 2024 and ‘25, respectively. In 2026, Rafaela has only marginally improved those numbers, with a whiff rate of 24.6 percent, down from 26.8 percent, and a chase rate of 38.6 percent, down from 42.2 percent. 

Despite only marginal improvement in both chase and whiff rates, the fourth-year outfielder has been much more selective in what he’s swinging at; his 65.7 percent in zone swing rate and 38.7 percent out of zone swing rate are both career lows. However, he is making more consistent contact on the pitches he chooses to swing at, posting career highs in both zone contact (86.5 percent) and out-of-zone contact (63.8 percent). 

Those slight changes have paid massive dividends for the 25-year-old as he's hitting .286/.340/.448/.787 in 68 games, which would all be career highs. Not only is Rafaela having a career year at the plate, he has already posted an fWAR of 2.0, good for the 11th most valuable outfielder in baseball. 

Whether it be the walk-off home run to propel the Red Sox past the Rays in July 2025 or the walk-off triple to send Boston to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, the spotlight always seems to find Rafaela, and more often than not, he delivers. 

In 2026, the 25-year-old has come to the plate in 30 high-leverage at-bats, leading all Boston hitters with a .300 batting average. In 336 high-leverage plate appearances in his career, Rafaela is hitting .258/.299/.436/.736 with 72 RBI. 

Even as Rafaela is on pace for a career year, it's easy to imagine there is another level for him to reach. 

Take the Chicago Cubs' star centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, for example. While Rafaela may not have as high a ceiling as Crow-Armstrong, they are very similar players, given their defensive acumen and penchant for chasing pitches out of the zone. As noted by Section 10 Podcast's Tyler Milliken, Crow-Armstrong's recent power surge has come in direct correlation to swinging less. 

Like Rafaela, Crow-Armstrong is posting career lows in both zone and out-of-zone swing rates, while making more consistent contact with the pitches he is swinging at. The only difference is that Crow-Armstrong has been slightly more selective, which is paying massive dividends as he now finds himself right in the thick of the National League MVP race. 

If Rafaela can continue to be more selective in the pitches he is swinging at, it's hard not to think he can still reach another level and become a true two-way superstar for Boston. 

The Red Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park, 4-3, to finish their six-game home stand 2-4. They'll head out on their first West Coast trip of the season, which gets underway on Friday night in Seattle, taking on the Mariners. Ranger Suarez (2-3, 3.21 ERA) gets the start for Boston opposite Bryce Miller (3-0, 1.54 ERA) for Seattle. First pitch from T-Mobile Park set for 10:10 p.m. ET.
