Entering Saturday, the Boston Red Sox are in control of their own destiny when it comes to the postseason.
The Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 11-7 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., on Friday. They are tied with the Houston Astros for the second and third wild card spots, trail the New York Yankees by two games for the top wild card spot and have a 1.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, who are the first team out of the postseason standings.
Boston outfielder Jarren Duran played a massive role in the team's win Friday. He went 2-for-6 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run. His homer was a two-run shot in the top of the seventh that gave the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.
That home run was Duran's 151st extra-base hit in the last two seasons, which included him in an elite category of franchise hitters.
According to a post on "X" from J.P. Long (@SoxNotes), Duran is the 10th player in Boston history to have over 150 extra-base hits over two-year span. He had 83 in 2024 and his home run Friday gave him 68 this season.
Other Red Sox players who've accomplished that feat are Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Jim Rice, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Nomar Garciaparra, J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts.
Last season, Duran scored 111 runs in 160 games and hit 48 doubles, 14 triples and 21 home runs with 75 RBIs. He slashed .285/.342/.492 with an .834 OPS. He stole 34 bases in 41 attempts.
This year, Duran has crossed home plate 83 times in 150 games and has hit 39 doubles, 13 triples and 16 homers with 82 RBIs. He's slashed .261/.335/.452 with a .787 OPS and has snagged 23 bags in 29 attempts.
Duran's doubles (48) and triples (14) led baseball in 2024.
His 39 doubles and 13 triples this season are tied for fifth and second in the majors, respectively.
If Boston makes the postseason this season, it would be its first playoff berth since 2021 and third since 2018. The Red Sox made the American League Championship Series in '21 and lost in six games to the Astros and won the World Series in '18 in five games against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
