The Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to four and improved to 41-48 on the season thanks to an 8-1 drubbing of the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. They did so on the back of rookie starter Payton Tolle, who achieved something not done in a Red Sox uniform since 1978. 

The 23-year-old entered Tuesday night’s start looking for a bounce-back after a rough five-start stretch in which he allowed 16 earned runs on 27 hits over 27 innings, good for a 5.33 ERA. 

Tolle got that bounce-back in a big way, shutting down a White Sox lineup that ranks in the top 10 in weighted runs created plus at home. He tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits while walking one and striking out six. According to JP Long on Twitter/X, he became the first Red Sox pitcher to make at least four starts of six or more shutout innings in a single season before turning 24 since Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley achieved the feat in 1978. He is also the only pitcher under 24 to reach that mark in 2026. 

Along with matching Eckersley’s feat, Tolle made American League history with his start on Tuesday. According to Long, he also became the first American League pitcher under 24-years-old to make three starts of six or more shutout innings while allowing three or fewer baserunners in a single season since earned runs became an official statistic in 1913. 

The Red Sox have become somewhat of a pitching factory during Craig Breslow’s three-year tenure as Chief Baseball Officer, consistently developing homegrown starters in Boston for the first time since Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz.

While Boston has gotten incredible production from fellow rookie lefties Connelly Early and Jake Bennett, Tolle is the crown jewel of the Red Sox' new pitching pipeline, seen as a future frontline starter. Tolle's fWAR of 1.9 is the highest among Red Sox rookie starters since Daisuke Matsuzaka posted a 2.9 fWAR over 32 starts in the 2007 season.

“He’s a future ace,” Red Sox All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras told MassLive.com’s Sean McAdam after the win. 

Among all rookie starters, Tolle ranks top 10 in ERA (3.14, 6th), strikeouts per nine innings (8.96, 9th), walks per nine innings (2.69, 4th), opponent batting average (.207, 4th), and fWAR (1.9, 3rd). 

As Contreras told McAdam, "the sky is the limit," for the 23-year-old lefty. 

The Red Sox will look to extend their four-game winning streak to five on Wednesday night in game two of three on the South Side of Chicago. It will be Bennett (3-3, 3.10 ERA) who gets the start for Boston opposite Davis Martin (9-3, 3.08 ERA) for Chicago. First pitch from Rate Field set for 7:40 p.m. ET.
