It’s been a quiet week across Major League Baseball as teams across the league make their last-minute pushes to prove to their front offices that they’re worthy of being trade deadline buyers. Among the teams that have slowly fallen out of contention and into sell mode is the reigning American League Champions, the Toronto Blue Jays. 

As the Jays turn their attention to whatever the 2027 season may look like, could star outfielder George Springer find himself in a Boston Red Sox uniform? The 36-year-old New England native is at least open to that idea. 

Like much of the Toronto roster, it hasn’t been the 2026 that Springer dreamed of, as he has struggled to a slash line of .235/.319/.402/.721 with 12 home runs and 34 RBI in 79 games played. However, the 36-year-old has performed better as of late, hitting .293/.359/.483/.842 in his last 15 games played. 

While he has struggled in 2026, he is just one year removed from a fantastic season where he hit .309/.399/.560/.969 with 32 home runs. 

Defensively, Springer has served as Toronto’s primary designated hitter, playing only one game in left field in 2026 after posting a -6 outs above average in 2025. 

Springer is in the final year of the six-year, $150 million deal he signed with Toronto ahead of the 2021 season. While he does hold a partial no-trade clause consisting of eight teams, according to Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports, the 11-year veteran is interested in joining the Red Sox for their playoff push. 

“One destination that interests Springer, according to a source familiar with his thinking, is Boston,” wrote McWilliams on Friday afternoon.

Given that the 36-year-old has struggled in 2026 and is owed around $8 million for the rest of the season, he should come at a fairly affordable price given Toronto's desire to shed money.

While Springer has struggled in 2026, he brings 83 games of playoff experience, 14 more than Boston's entire group of position players. In those 83 games, Springer has thrived under the bright lights, hitting .274/.346/.534/.880. The 36-year-old starred in the Houston Astros' controversial 2017 World Series run, hitting .292/.386/.611/.997 en route to being named World Series Most Valuable Player.

Along with his strong performances in October, Springer has thrived at Fenway Park, hitting .323/.400/.540/.940 with 10 home runs, nine doubles and 41 RBI in 51 games. In Toronto's most recent series at Fenway, July 24-26, the 36-year-old went 4-for-13 with a three-run home run. 

Whether it be as a designated hitter or as a left fielder, Springer would represent an upgrade in the Boston lineup that has failed to get much production from either position in 2026. Red Sox left fielders, primarily Jarren Duran, have posted a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of __, the __-lowest mark in baseball. While their rotating cast of designated hitters, primarily Masataka Yoshida as of late, has posted a __ wRC+, the __-lowest mark.
