The Boston Red Sox announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have signed veteran catcher Andrew Knizner to a minor league contract, and they have assigned him to Triple-A Worcester. Could the signing mean that one of Boston's major league catchers is on their way out of Boston? 

The 31-year-old right-handed-hitting catcher has spent parts of seven seasons in the majors with St. Louis, Texas, and San Francisco. In 323 games at the major league level, Knizner has hit .211/.281/.316/.597 with 19 home runs and 90 RBI. His most productive season came in 2017 with the Cardinals, when the then-28-year-old hit .241/.288/.424/.712 with 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 70 games. 

He last played at the major league level in 2025 with the Giants, where he struggled both at the plate and in the field. In just 33 games, he hit .221/.299/.299/.598, while posting a -3 blocks above average and a two-second pop-time, which ranked in the 10th percentile among all catchers. 

After spending Spring Training with the Seattle Mariners, Knizner has spent the 2026 season with the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, where he hit .279/.371/.590/.961 in 140 plate appearances. He was released on June 18 after triggering an opt-out in his contract.

He will join a crowded catcher's room in Worcester that features veterans Jason Delay and Matt Thaiss, along with longtime Red Sox farmhand Nathan Hickey. 

The Red Sox already have a crowded catching room at the major league level featuring Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez, and Mickey Gasper. Wong and Gasper are handling the bulk of the duties behind the plate thanks to Narvaez's struggles. 

However, The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey reported on June 6 that Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow was shopping their trio of major league catchers, Wong in particular. 

While Knizner's signing likely doesn't mean that any deal involving Wong or any of the Red Sox' three catchers is imminent, it is worth noting that the 31-year-old is joining an already packed catching room in Worcester. The signing could be a signal that Breslow is looking to move not only one of their major league catchers, but maybe multiple, with Knizner simply the team supplementing their depth in preparation for that. 

In the meantime, the Red Sox will look to bounce back from Monday night's ninth-inning disaster in game two of three from Colorado. Sonny Gray (8-1, 3.12 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite rookie lefty Sean Sullivan (0-1, 10.29 ERA) for the Rockies. First pitch from Coors Field set for 8:40 p.m. ET.
