Andrew Abbott commented on his difficult performance against the Angels.

The Cincinnati Reds were defeated by the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, losing by a final score of 9-6. It was a difficult all-around performance for the pitchers in the game. Andrew Abbott struggled in his start, as he allowed seven earned runs across three innings of work. He also gave up eight hits, walked two hitters and recorded only one strikeout.

Abbott has been one of the better pitchers in the game in recent years, but the southpaw now has a 5.85 ERA in four starts so far in 2026. So, what went wrong on Sunday? Abbott addressed his outing after the loss, via Charlie Goldsmith.

"I was locating up and in to this guys," Abbott said. "I got some soft contact that found some holes. Credit to those guys. I just didn’t step up and make pitches when I needed to."

Abbott has surrendered 13 earned runs in 20 innings of work. Of course, seven of those runs came in Sunday's contest. He is not having a terrible year despite what his ERA may suggest. Sunday's outing was simply a difficult start.

Batters are hitting .321 against Abbott, however. He is having a difficult time limiting hits and base runners. The left-hander has given up a total of 26 hits up to this point.

This is a pitcher who recorded a career-best 2.87 ERA in 29 starts in 2025. He's pitched in MLB since 2023 and the southpaw has never had an ERA higher than 3.87.

The track record suggests he will be alright. Nevertheless, Abbott will need to do a better job of limiting hits in order to bounce back.

Reds Lose to Angels

It was an unfortunate loss, as the Reds' lackluster offense rarely has six-run outbursts. The Reds need to find ways to get the job done when the lineup comes through.

Elly De La Cruz has been playing well in recent action. He hit a home run, recorded two total hits and had three RBIs in the game. Sal Stewart also had a hit and an RBI. The pitching did not hold up its end of the bargain, as Abbott gave up the aforementioned seven runs and the bullpen allowed two more runs.

Nevertheless, Cincinnati's offense performed well. The Reds have had one of the worst offenses in baseball this year, so they should be content with the lineup's performance.

The Reds will have an off day on Monday before beginning a three-game series on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. Brady Singer is scheduled to start the contest for Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the Giants will turn to Robbie Ray.

First pitch for the Giants and Reds clash is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST in Cincinnati.
