The Reds announced multiple roster moves.

The Cincinnati Reds continue to prepare for the 2026 regular season at spring training. While spring always brings a sense of joy and optimism for the upcoming season, it also leads to teams having to make difficult decisions. On Friday, the Reds announced that multiple players were reassigned to minor league camp

It is never an easy decision, but only 26 players can end up on the Opening Day roster. As a result, many players who attend spring training camp end up not making the big league squad.

Reds Make Multiple Roster Moves at Spring Training

Right-handed pitcher Darren McCaughan was among the players reassigned to minor league camp on Friday. McCaughan, 29, has pitched in 20 total MLB games since making his big league debut in 2021 with the Seattle Mariners. He has struggled for the most part, recording a 6.02 ERA.

McCaughan's MLB experience makes him a candidate to potentially receive a big league promotion during the '26 season if the Reds end up needing added bullpen depth.

Right-handed pitcher Julian Aguiar, infielder Edwin Arroyo, right-handed pitcher Jose Franco and outfielder Hector Rodriguez were all reassigned to minor league camp and optioned to Triple-A on Friday. Meanwhile, infielder Leo Balcazar was optioned to Double-A in addition to being reassigned to minor league camp.

Arroyo is a name that stands out. The shortstop is the Reds' No. 5 overall prospect heading into 2026, per MLB.com. He is known for his defensive prowess at the premier position. However, Arroyo is still improving his all-around hitting ability at the plate.

If Arroyo can find consistency from an offensive standpoint, his defense will take care of the rest. Of course, Elly De La Cruz is currently the shortstop in Cincinnati. Nevertheless, Arroyo's future is promising without question.

Overall, the Reds feature a number of intriguing players with bright futures within their farm system. Their top three prospects -- Chase Burns, Rhett Lowder and Sal Stewart -- all could end up making the MLB roster. Stewart is expected to make the Opening Day roster, while Burns and Lowder are both currently competing for the No. 5 spot in the Reds' starting rotation.

A small-market ball club has to rely upon developing players. The Reds have done an impressive job of accomplishing that. Their core of up and coming stars will look to help the team make a postseason run during the upcoming 2026 season.
