Rodriguez has the second most home runs in the International League.

Cincinnati outfield prospect Hector Rodriguez has continued his power tear this season, reaching a new level of dominance with back-to-back multi-home run games. He reached 23 home runs on Wednesday night for the Louisville Bats.

The 22-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic is hitting .290 this season with a .918 OPS. He is on a scorching-hot tear in July and is currently 9-for-19 with five home runs. Rodriguez has the second-most home runs in the International League, five behind St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Joshua Báez.

He has developed the power aspect of his offense significantly over the past four seasons. In 2021 and 2022, he hit three home runs in each season. Rodriguez then hit 16 home runs in 2023, 12 in 2024, 19 in 2025, and has increased that total to 23 in 2026. It doesn’t look like he’s slowing down. He also hasn’t had a season in which he hit below .270.

Rodriguez was acquired by the Reds in 2022 when they traded outfielder Tyler Naquin and relief pitcher Philip Diehl to the New York Mets. It looks like it could become one of the better deals President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall has made during his time with Cincinnati. Rodriguez has emerged as possibly the best hitter in the Reds’ farm system, competing with catcher Alfredo Duno. His smooth left-handed swing has fans lobbying the Reds’ front office to call him up despite some holes in his game, while others want him to continue developing in the minor leagues before making the jump.

The moves the Reds make at the trade deadline could increase the likelihood of Rodriguez joining the club during the second half of the season. There is a possibility that Spencer Steer and JJ Bleday could be traded at the deadline, while Dane Meyers and Blake Dunn have struggled with injuries and are currently on the injured list.

Cincinnati recently designated Will Benson for assignment, and after he cleared waivers, he was assigned to Triple-A Louisville. As the season continues and the losses pile up, the possibility of competing for the playoffs continues to fade. Getting the roster ready for next season seems like a smart move. Allowing Rodriguez to establish himself in the lineup ahead of the 2027 season would be a logical decision, and I’d expect the Reds to give him at-bats with the big league club before the end of the season as roster spots become available.
