Cincinnati Reds prospect Sal Stewart offers an element of versatility with his ability to play both first and third base. However, he checked in as a first baseman on MLB.com's 2026 prospect rankings. Stewart is also the top ranked first base prospect.
Stewart, 22, is a pure hitter. He provides some power from the right side of the plate, but Stewart's bat-to-ball skills stand out. He gets on base at a respectable rate as well while rarely striking out. Stewart's all-around prowess at the plate makes him a dangerous hitter.
Regardless of whether or not he stays at first base or ends up playing elsewhere in the infield, Stewart's bat is what will make him a star in the big leagues.
Stewart received a cup of coffee in the major leagues last year. The Reds called him up for 18 games and the infielder slashed .255/.293/.545 across 58 plate appearances. Stewart did not have any problems from a home run stand point, as he blasted five long balls during that span.
He projects to get on base more consistently, but it wasn't a bad first taste of big league action for Stewart. Stewart is seemingly ready to play in MLB, as his ETA is set for 2026 on MLB.com.
It remains to be seen where he wil play in Cincinnati, though. Spencer Steer is also a first base candidate. Ke'Bryan Hayes is one of the best defensive third baseman in baseball so he will handle duties at the hot corner. It isn't certain if second base is even an option for Stewart, but Matt McLain is the Reds' second baseman at the moment.
First base or designated hitter seemingly provide the fastest route to consistent MLB playing time for Stewart. The Reds simply need to find a way to get his bat in the lineup. Cincinnati features an intriguing starting pitching rotation with potential, but their lineup is full of question marks. They need all of the offensive help they can get.
Stewart could instantly help Cincinnati's lineup take a step forward. Sure, he is only 22 years old and it may take him a few years to reach his true ceiling, but Stewart's bat is likely capable of making a significant impact as soon as this season.
Reds fans will want to pay close attention to Sal Stewart throughout the upcoming 2026 MLB season.
