Sal Stewart has high expectations for his MLB career.

Cincinnati Reds top prospect Sal Stewart has the ceiling of a superstar. He is one of the best young hitters in the sport. In fact, manager Terry Francona has said that Stewart is one of the more advanced young hitters he's seen. Stewart's desire cannot be questioned either, as he recently revealed the lofty expectations he has for his MLB career, via Charlie Clifford.

"I want to be great, I don't want to just be good," Stewart said. "I don't just want to make it, I want to be someone people, like, remember forever. I want to take care of my family, I want them to never have to work again. Making it doesn't do anything for me. I want to be in this game for, like, 20-plus years."

Stewart's bat is the best facet of his game. He is still developing overall from a defensive standpoint, but he's ready for the big leagues when it comes to his offense. According to MLB.com, Stewart is the No. 22 overall prospect in the sport. At 22 years old, the sky's the limit for Stewart.

He had a cup of coffee in MLB last year, playing in 18 games. Stewart is expected to make the Reds' Opening Day roster in 2026, and he will surely be among the favorites for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.

Which Position will Sal Stewart Play in 2026?

Stewart can play third, second or first base. However, Ke'Bryan Hayes is a tremendous fielder at third base. Eugenio Suarez may see time at first base. The expectation for Stewart heading into spring training was that he'd split time between designated hitter and first base, while possibly filling in at third base when Hayes needed a day off. On Sunday, however, Francona said Stewart will play first and second base in spring training, per Charlie Goldsmith.

Francona reportedly explained that while Matt McLain will be the Reds' second baseman in 2026, Stewart could handle duties at the position whenever he needs a day off.

It does seem as if first base could end up becoming his primary position, though. With Suarez possibly spending more time at DH and an infield that includes Hayes at third, McLain at second and Elly De La Cruz at shortstop, first base makes the most sense for Stewart.

The most important part of the entire situation for Cincinnati is that they find a way to have Sal Stewart's bat in the lineup on a consistent basis. Cincinnati's pitching is the strength, while the lineup has serious question marks. Stewart's offensive prowess is expected to make a significant difference, though.
