Chris Paddack made his Reds debut on Saturday.
The Cincinnati Reds were defeated by the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday, losing by a final score of 7-4. While the Reds would have obviously preferred to have earned a victory, there was some good news that emerged from the contest. Chris Paddack made his Reds debut against the Guardians and performed well.
Paddack signed with the Miami Marlins before the season. However, he struggled with Miami and he was ultimately designated for assignment. After being released, Paddack ended up landing a deal with the Reds.
On Saturday, Paddack turned in five innings of two-run baseball in his Reds debut. He added three strikeouts while walking one batter and allowing six hits.
Paddack is still capable of making an impact. He has always displayed potential, but consistency has been the problem for him. Injuries have impacted Paddack as well.
In 2019, Paddack turned in a 3.33 ERA with the San Diego Padres in his rookie season. It seemed as if San Diego had a future star in the rotation.
He has not recorded an ERA of lower than 4.03 since that 2019 campaign. The right-handed hurler has also only appeared in 20 or more games two times since the '19 season.
The Reds are hopeful that Chris Paddack will bounce back. Saturday's start was certainly encouraging.
Reds Lose to Guardians on Saturday
Paddack performed well but the Reds still lost to the Guardians in Cleveland. Offensively, Cincinnati recorded four runs on five hits. Spencer Steer and Blake Dunn led the way, as Steer hit a double and recorded two RBIs while Dunn finished the game with two hits in three at-bats.
It was not a bad offensive day for the ball club, but the bullpen struggled following Paddack's departure. They surrendered five runs as the Guardians' up and down offense enjoyed a big game.
The Reds are now 24-22 overall in 2026. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for last place in the National League Central standings. Cincinnati can certainly still compete despite an inconsistent performance in recent action.
The Reds were able to earn a victory against the Guardians on Friday night. The series is 1-1 heading into Sunday's game.
The ball clubs from Ohio both want to get the job done in the matchup. It will surely be a competitive ball game once again.
First pitch for Sunday's Reds and Guardians game is scheduled for 1:40 PM EST in Cleveland.
