Terry Francona provided the latest Reds injury updates.
The Cincinnati Reds have started their regular season. Before Sunday afternoon's game against the Boston Red Sox, manager Terry Francona provided injury updates on starting pitcher Nick Lodolo and reliever Caleb Ferguson, via Mike Petraglia.
Lodolo threw a bullpen on Sunday and is now expected to throw another bullpen on Wednesday. If no setbacks occur for Lodolo, who is battling a blister on his finger, he will likely pitch in a rehab outing on Friday.
Ferguson is dealing with an oblique injury. The southpaw threw off flat ground at 60 feet on Sunday and will move to 75 feet on Monday.
Both pitchers are seemingly trending in the right direction. There is still work to be done amid their injury rehabs, but these are promising updates.
Lodolo, Ferguson Recovering From Injury Concerns
Lodolo had a blister on his finger emerge during spring training. It was initially uncertain if a stint on the injured list would be necessary. It ended up happening, but the left-hander is not expected to miss too much time. If no setbacks occur, he may only need one or two rehab starts before returning to the rotation.
Ferguson suffered his oblique injury earlier during the spring. He was originally expected to miss the first couple weeks of the season at least. It remains to be seen when he will return. He is already throwing, so perhaps it won't be too long before Reds fans are able to see Ferguson back on a big league mound.
The Reds' pitching staff has dealt with a number of early season injury concerns. In addition to Lodolo and Ferguson, ace Hunter Greene is expected to be out until July due to an injury.
Cincinnati features a respectable amount of pitching depth, however. The hope is that the team can stay afloat until the injured pitchers return. Lodolo will instantly play a big role when he re-joins the rotation, while Ferguson is expected to make a significant impact out of the bullpen this year.
At the moment, the Reds are playing the Red Sox in Cincinnati. The series is split 1-1, as the Reds bounced back from their Opening Day loss with a win on Saturday. Cincinnati would love to begin the new campaign with an opening series win.
As for Lodolo and Ferguson, updates will continue to be monitored and provided on their injury statuses as they are made available.
