Will Nick Lodolo return soon?

The Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox are currently going head-to-head in the second contest of a three-game series. Before the game, an update on Nick Lodolo was revealed. Lodolo, who is dealing with a blister on his finger, is expected to throw a bullpen on Sunday and could pitch in a rehab game on Wednesday, according to Charlie Goldsmith.

Lodolo, 28, is hoping to return soon. The blister concern is not expected to force him to miss too much time. Cincinnati is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

The left-handed starter had a breakout season in 2025, as he turned in a strong 3.33 ERA across 29 total outings. Lodolo added 156 strikeouts in his 156.2 innings of work on the mound.

The Reds are expecting him to play a crucial role in the starting rotation this year. With Hunter Greene expected to be out until July due to an injury, Cincinnati will especially need a big performance from Lodolo.

The Reds pitching is the team's strength. Andrew Abbott started on Opening Day and pitched well despite a 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Cincinnati's lineup did not help matters, but Abbott still stepped up on Opening Day.

In addition to Lodolo, pitchers such as Brady Singer, Chase Burns, Rhett Lowder and Brandon Williamson will help the rotation. Lowder, Burns and Williamson all surprisingly made the big league roster, but the move is looking to be quite important at the moment given Lodolo's injury absence.

Reds-Red Sox Series

As mentioned, the Reds and Red Sox went head-to-head on Opening Day in Cincinnati. The Reds' offense never found a rhythm and the team fell short in a defeat. It was a pitcher's duel, as Garrett Crochet impressed for Boston.

The Reds are set to play the Red Sox once again on Saturday and Sunday. Boston presents a difficult challenge for Cincinnati to begin the new campaign. The Red Sox had a big offseason and are expecting to make a serious run in 2026. However, the Reds also plan to compete this year.

The series should continue to be competitive. Following the interleague series, the Reds will face a National League Central rival in the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series from Monday through Wednesday.

For now, the team's focus is on Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Meanwhile, updates on Nick Lodolo's status will continue to be provided.
