The Cincinnati Reds have high expectations for the 2026 MLB season. They feature a talented roster with potential. While we know that Elly De La Cruz is an All-Star and Sal Stewart could win the National League Rookie of the Year, there are other players who could surprise the MLB world in 2026.
Without further ado, here are three surprising Reds predictions for the 2026 campaign.
Matt McLain was once a highly regarded prospect. In 2023, he finished fifth in NL Rookie of the Year voting after hitting .290 to go along with an .864 OPS. An injury kept McLain out for the entire 2024 season, and he did not look the same after returning in 2025.
McLain hit just .220 last year, but his potential is still present. At 26 years old, McLain could be on the verge of not just a bounce back season, but an All-Star campaign. His spring training performance certainly suggests it is a possibility.
McLain led the Reds with seven home runs during spring training. He ultimately slashed .542/.585/1.063 across 16 games played. He added two doubles and two stolen bases in what was a tremendous spring.
Look for McLain to establish himself as one of the best second baseman in the NL and earn an All-Star selection in 2026.
28-year-old Nick Lodolo has always featured a high ceiling. He endured ups and downs through the first few years of his career, but Lodolo enjoyed a breakout 2025 campaign. The southpaw turned in a 3.33 ERA across 29 outings. He also threw two complete games and one shutout.
With Hunter Greene expected to be out until July due to an injury, the Reds' starters will need to step up. Andrew Abbott is getting the Opening Day start, but Lodolo could be the pitcher who steps into the ace role.
Lodolo will finish within the top 10 of NL Cy Young voting this year.
The Reds narrowly reached the postseason as an NL Wild Card team last year. They were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Wild Card round, however.
In 2026, the Reds should be able to perform at a more consistent level. Greene's absence will negatively impact the team without question, but Cincinnati still features a respectable amount of starting rotation depth. Meanwhile, the Eugenio Suarez signing will give the Reds offense a necessary boost.
While Cincinnati is probably still a year or two away from seriously contending for a World Series, they should be able to take a step forward in 2026. Look for the Reds to reach the NLDS.
