One of the primary discussions around the Cincinnati Reds has been their lack of offense. The pitching is good, and while the team has some talented offensive players -- such as Elly De La Cruz and Eugenio Suarez -- the lineup is not expected to make too much noise in 2026. One player who has been overlooked is Will Benson, though.
The Reds were defeated 4-2 by the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday. The two runs scored came via a two-run home run from Benson, however.
It was a big home run for Benson. A former first round pick by Cleveland, Benson has always featured a high ceiling. He was traded to the Reds in 2023, and Cincinnati is hoping that he can break out at some point soon.
It is important to remember that Benson is still only 27 years old. If he can stay healthy and find consistency at the plate, the Reds may end up having a new star outfielder.
In 2025, Benson was limited to only 90 games played. He still managed to hit 12 home runs during that span. Overall, the slugger slashed .226/.273/.435.
Benson does not get on base enough. He is inconsistent overall at the plate. The power is real, though. If he can find a way to get on base at a more respectable rate, Benson could certainly become a reliable offensive player in the middle of Cincinnati's batting order.
As mentioned, he is also a left-handed hitter. Cincinnati's lineup needs more balance in that regard. Players such as Suarez, Sal Stewart and Matt McLain all hit from the right side of the plate. Meanwhile, De La Cruz is a switch-hitter. Having a true left-handed slugger in the lineup should help the team.
Cincinnati desperately needs all of the run production help it can get. Even if Benson does not hit for a high average, this is a team that will benefit from a power hitting outfielder. It will be interesting to see if Benson gets an everyday opportunity during the 2026 campaign. One has to imagine he will receive a quality amount of playing time.
Will Benson will be a player to watch throughout the spring. As for the Reds, their next game in spring training is scheduled for Sunday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM EST.
