The Cincinnati Reds need to upgrade their offense. The pitching rotation features intriguing potential, but the lineup is full of question marks. Eugenio Suarez is still available in free agency, and he may be the perfect fit for the Reds.
Suarez, 34, is primarily a third baseman, but he is capable of playing first base or serving as the designated hitter if necessary. Cincinnati values Ke'Bryan Hayes' defense at the hot corner, so Suarez likely would not play third in Cincinnati.
However, if he's willing to shift full-time to first base or DH, Suarez's fit would make plenty of sense. In 2025, he earned his second career All-Star selection. Suarez ended up hitting just .228 between his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Settle Mariners, but he crushed 49 home runs and recorded 118 RBI while recording an .824 OPS.
Suarez has become one of the best right-handed power hitters in the game. For a Reds offense that needs to find offensive production, Suarez should be a player they reach out to in free agency.
Suarez is a two-time All-Star, but he's also 34 years old. The other top position player free agents -- Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger -- are all 30 years old or younger. Bellinger is 30, while Tucker is 28 and Bichette is only 27 years old.
All three players feature higher ceilings than Suarez as well. Between age and ceiling, Suarez won't command as lucrative a contract as the aforementioned other free agents. Still, Suarez deserves a respectable contract -- but turning to a cheaper player like Suarez makes sense for the small-market Reds.
Overall value is important, and Suarez's power would instantly give the Reds the boost they have been searching for. Suarez's presence would also lead to a true breakout season for Elly De La Cruz as well, as the Reds star would have added protection in the lineup.
It is often difficult to find the perfect fit in free agency for teams. For a small-market Reds ball club that should have a realistic opportunity to make a playoff run in 2026, though, Suarez simply makes too much sense. The Reds' pitching is strong but the offense needs help. Cincinnati would benefit from a true power hitter.
Eugenio Suarez is the guy they need to pursue as spring training draws near.
