Will this pitcher make the Reds' Opening Day roster?

The Cincinnati Reds are looking to upset expectations and make another postseason run in 2026. One pitcher who could play an X-factor type of role is Tejay Antone -- if he makes the big league roster. Mark Sheldon of MLB.com recently named Antone as a potential dark horse candidate to make the Reds' roster out of spring training.

Antone has always featured intriguing potential, but the 32-year-old pitcher has endured three Tommy John surgeries. Injuries have unfortunately impacted him throughout his career. When healthy, the right-handed hurler has found success.

Tejay Antone's Career at the MLB Level

He has appeared in a total of 45 games, pitching to a career 2.47 ERA. In 2021, he recorded both a career-high 23 games pitched and a career-best 2.14 ERA. He was unfortunately unable to build momentum off of his strong performance because he missed 2022 due to injury.

Antone last appeared in an MLB game during the 2024 MLB season. He only made four total appearances in 2024, though.

Antone is currently in spring training battling for a roster spot. Cincinnati's bullpen would benefit from a boost, and Antone is a pitcher who could work in long relief, middle relief, or even a setup role. He would be a versatile option to have in the bullpen.

The Reds are currently monitoring his spring training performance. If he pitches at a respectable level, it would not be surprising to see him land on the MLB roster for Opening Day in 2026. If Antone makes the roster and stays healthy, he could finally pitch up to his potential. Staying healthy will certainly be of the utmost importance for Antone moving forward.

Reds' Bullpen Outlook

One of the most underrated moves of the offseason was the Reds' decision to re-sign closer Emilio Pagan. He offers crucial stability in the back of the bullpen.

Graham Ashcraft, Tony Santillan and Caleb Ferguson are among the other relief options in the Reds' bullpen. Cincinnati's relief core has potential, but as mentioned, bringing in a pitcher such as Antone would only help matters. The added depth could prove to be crucial.

Tejay Antone will be a player to watch throughout spring training as he hopes to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. The Reds' next spring training contest is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon against the Kansas City Royals. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM EST.
