Lowder impressed on Saturday in the Reds' win over the Rangers.
The Cincinnati Reds earned a competitive 2-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday. Cincinnati's lineup has yet to consistently find success this year, but the pitching is keeping them in games. 24-year-old Rhett Lowder started Saturday's contest, and it is safe to say he pitched well.
Lowder and Rangers starter Kumar Rocker were engaged in a pitcher's duel. Rocker ultimately lasted five innings and surrendered two runs. Lowder, meanwhile, turned in six shutout innings while striking out four hitters in a winning effort. The bullpen followed Lowder with three shutout innings.
Heading into spring training, there were no guarantees that Lowder would even make the big league roster. Now the idea of Lowder not being on the roster seems unrealistic. He is clearly ready for the MLB level.
Lowder only allowed three total hits on Saturday. The Rangers feature a number of talented hitters in their lineup. Yet, Lowder had almost no problems on Saturday.
The Reds made the right decision by having him in the big league starting rotation.
Rhett Lowder's 2026 Performance
Lowder has pitched to a 1.64 ERA across two starts this season.
His first start of 2026 came at home against the Boston Red Sox. In that contest, Lowder allowed two earned runs across five innings of work. He added five strikeouts in the no-decision.
Despite facing a talented Red Sox lineup, Lowder gave his ball club an opportunity to compete in his first start of the year.
On Saturday against the Rangers, Lowder did more than simply give his team a chance to win. Rather, he led the Reds to the victory. He was in control throughout the matchup. Lowder made it clear that he can help Cincinnati win any game when he is at his best regardless of how the lineup performs.
The offense has been inconsistent overall. That may not improve unless the Reds add a bat or two at the trade deadline. For now, all the team can do is rely on the pitching and hope the offense provides enough value.
With Rhett Lowder pitching at a high level, Cincinnati's rotation is in a respectable overall spot. Lowder will look to maintain his momentum moving forward.
With the victory, the Reds improved to 5-3 overall this year. Cincinnati currently sits in second place in the National League East. The Reds' next game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon against the Rangers at 2:35 PM EST.
