The Cincinnati Reds are in an interesting position at the moment. On one hand, they are in the pursuit of becoming a contender. They are seemingly past the point of a full rebuild. On the other hand, Cincinnati isn't quite ready to seriously compete. So, should the Reds go all in on building a winning roster right now or would slowly trusting the development of their prospects be a better solution?
The Reds are rumored to have interest in competing as soon as the 2026 season. If that is in fact the case, then acquiring a star or two via trades will emerge as a realistic option. Los Angeles Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow has been mentioned as a trade candidate, and the Reds should consider bringing him to Cincinnati.
Glasnow has plenty of postseason experience. The Reds feature a young roster and would benefit from a veteran leader. The 32-year-old was limited to 18 games pitched in 2025, but he did turn in a strong 3.18 ERA during that span.
Glasnow also has two seasons of team control remaining on his contract to go along with a club option for the 2028 season. He will make around $30 million in each of the next couple of years, but perhaps the Dodgers would be willing to help pay his salary.
Cincinnati would have to give the Dodgers enough of a return to make it worth their while. If the Reds can build an enticing enough trade package, LA will likely at least listen.
For Glasnow, a move to the Reds also makes sense. Sure, his chances of winning another World Series would decrease, but he already accomplished that feat in LA. Joining the Reds would give him an opportunity to be their No. 1 or No. 2 option. At the moment, he is one of six or seven legitimate starting options for the Dodgers.
Glasnow has always featured true Cy Young potential. Taking that step forward in his career could be enhanced by receiving the opportunity to lead the Reds' rotation. Hunter Greene and Glasnow would become one of the best duos in the National League.
The Reds have not been mentioned as a potential suitor for Glasnow in trade rumors. With that being said, Cincinnati should at least consider the possibility. Adding a veteran starter with a high ceiling would certainly help them achieve their goal of contending sooner rather than later.
