The Reds may have a true superstar.
The Cincinnati Reds have performed well overall in 2026 to begin the season. It has not been a perfect season by any means, but Cincinnati is finding ways to win games. They are 11-8 overall as of this story's writing. Starting pitcher Chase Burns has played a crucial role in the team's overall success.
Burns, who was previously a top prospect, struggled in 2025 -- which was his first MLB season -- across 13 total outings (eight starts). He pitched to a 4.57 ERA in his 43.1 innings on the mound, and it was clear that he was still making the adjustment to the big leagues.
Some questioned if Burns would be able to figure things out during the 2026 season. He has only made four starts so far, but the Reds right-handed pitcher looks like he is now ready for the MLB level to say the least.
Burns currently holds a 2.42 ERA across 22.1 innings of work. He has struck out 22 hitters during that span. In all reality, Burns has looked like one of the better pitchers in all of baseball so far this year.
There is obviously a lot of baseball left to be played. It remains to be seen how Burns will end up performing throughout an entire 162-game season. He has unquestionably displayed the talent and potential for success, though.
The Reds have needed Burns to pitch well. Cincinnati's offense has been inconsistent at best. While the pitching has been alright, ace Hunter Greene is currently recovering from an injury. Finding success without Greene was never going to be easy, but the Reds are performing well considering the circumstances. Burns' pitching is a big reason why they are tied for the lead in the National League Central division right now.
Burns should be able to keep things going. He seems to have taken the next step in 2026, which is crucial for the Reds.
What's Next for the Reds?
The Reds are set to play the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. They will have two more games against the Twins in Minnesota over the weekend as well. Left-hander Brandon Williamson will start Friday's game. Burns most recently pitched on Thursday, so he will not pitch in this series.
The Reds will look to continue playing well against a Twins ball club that has also upset expectations early in the year. It projects to be a competitive all-around series.
