The Colorado Rockies turned an ugly first game against the Arizona Diamondbacks into fuel that helped them take the series.

After a brutal 9-0 loss to open their series on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Colorado Rockies bounced back in a big way not once, but twice.

After defeating Arizona on Tuesday at Chase Field, 3-2, the Rockies won again on Wednesday, 6-4, to take the series from the Diamondbacks in their house.

A dominant inning

After Colorado’s hitters went down in order in the top of the first, Arizona made its mark on the scoreboard in the bottom frame after starting right-hander Ryan Feltner allowed a triple and an RBI single.

Given how Colorado’s pitching has struggled on this road trip and, well, all season, things could have gotten ugly fast, but Feltner escaped the inning when the defense turned a double play.

Then, the Rockies not only responded, but put up a barrage in the second inning.

The inning began with Hunter Goodman drawing a leadoff walk against Merrill Kelly before Mickey Moniak singled. Willi Castro subsequently hit an RBI single to score Goodman and tie the game.

Kelly and the Diamondbacks’ defense ended up notching two outs, but Brett Sullivan made sure his teammates got across home plate when he rocked a three-run home run to right field, his sixth long ball of the year.

Neither team scored in the third, but Colorado added two more runs in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Zac Veen, his first of the season. At that point, the Rockies had scored six unanswered runs and enjoyed a very comfortable 6-1 lead.

Enough of a cushion

It was a good thing that Colorado’s offense made the most of its opportunities early on because the Diamondbacks began to creep back into the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Feltner gave up an RBI double to Gabriel Moreno. In the bottom of the seventh, relievers Juan Mejia and Jimmy Hergert gave up four combined walks that scored another run for Arizona to make it a 6-3 game.

The Diamondbacks struck again in the eighth when Brennan Bernardino gave up a solo home run to Corbin Carroll to cut the Rockies’ lead to 6-4. Arizona threatened with two more singles, but Bernardino got out of the frame.

Jordan Romano closed the deal in the ninth, and Colorado proved that when its offense can execute at a high level, wins become possible, and that was demonstrated on Wednesday. Next, the Rockies will finish their road trip with a three-game slate against the San Francisco Giants.
