The Kansas City Royals and right-handed pitcher Aaron Sanchez reportedly agreed to a deal on Tuesday, per Robert Murray of FanSided. It is a minor league contract for Sanchez, and he also receives an invite to spring training.
Sanchez, 33, last pitched in MLB in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins. However, he is known in MLB for his time with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Sanchez made his big league debut back in 2014 with Toronto. In 2016, Sanchez earned an All-Star selection and finished seventh in American League MVP voting. He was limited in 2017 and was not the same pitcher after that.
Nevertheless, Sanchez is set to receive another opportunity. He has received minor league contracts since that 2022 campaign. While he has not been able to return to the major leagues, Sanchez could potentially accomplish the feat with the Royals.
Sanchez recently found success in the Dominican Winter League, as he pitched to a 1.55 ERA across 46.1 innings pitched during the 2025-26 season. The right-handed hurler is hoping to carry his momentum into spring training in hopes of landing a spot on the Royals' roster.
Aaron Sanchez has been a starter for most of his career. Kansas City's rotation could realistically use a boost. Cole Ragans will lead the way. Michael Wacha is an established veteran. Kris Bubic is a capable starter, but he has also been discussed as a possible trade candidate.
Seth Lugo and Noah Cameron are other starting rotation options. If Sanchez has a big spring training, though, one has to wonder if Kansas City will consider giving Sanchez a spot in the rotation.
Sanchez may also be a bullpen option. He could give Kansas City multiple innings in relief. However, it is uncertain if Sanchez is open to working out of the bullpen, or if the Royals would even consider the idea this season.
There is a chance he may begin the 2026 season in the minor leagues. If he performs well enough, the Royals could give him another opportunity later in the '26 campaign if a spot on the big league roster opens up.
Aaron Sanchez once displayed unquestionable promise. While his MLB career did not go according to plan following his impressive 2016 season, Sanchez now has an opportunity to re-establish himself as a legitimate pitcher at the big league level.
