The 2026 World Baseball Classic is just days away, and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is soaking in every moment of it.
Team USA is set to open pool play on March 6 against Brazil at Daikin Park in Houston, and the energy around the squad is already through the roof.
When asked about what it feels like to be part of this group, Witt did not hold back.
"Yeah, it's unbelievable just the guys that are out here, the camaraderie I feel like we've already built and just getting to represent these three letters across our chest means everything," Witt said.
That kind of excitement makes sense when you look at the roster surrounding him, which features captain Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Cal Raleigh, Kyle Schwarber, and both 2025 Cy Young Award winners in Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal.
The Americans are coming in with a combined 65 All-Star Game appearances and four former MVPs on the roster, making this one of the most talented teams the country has ever assembled.
Team USA went 3-1 in pool play during the 2023 World Baseball Classic before advancing all the way to the championship game, where Japan's Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout on the final pitch to secure the title.
That loss still stings, and it is a big reason why this group is so motivated to finish the job in 2026.
While Witt was on that 2023 roster, he mostly served as a pinch runner and defensive substitute, picking up just three plate appearances during the tournament.
This time around, things are very different because Witt is expected to be the starting shortstop and could hit leadoff for a lineup that is absolutely stacked from top to bottom.
Coming off a 2025 season where he hit .295 with a .351 on-base percentage and an .852 OPS across 157 games, Witt has proven he belongs among the best players in the sport.
He added 23 home runs, 88 RBIs, 38 stolen bases, and led all of MLB with 184 hits and 47 doubles, earning his second straight All-Star selection, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove Award while finishing fourth in AL MVP voting.
The five-tool talent is no longer just a prospect with potential, he is a fully formed superstar who can impact the game in every way possible.
The WBC has a history of turning great players into household names, and Witt has all the tools to be this tournament's breakout star.
He is not quite as well known as guys like Judge or Ohtani when it comes to casual fans, but a strong showing in Houston and beyond could change that in a hurry.
Witt has already looked sharp during spring training, hitting .400 through his first couple of games and going viral after a triple that showcased his elite speed.
He has said that he feels more ready coming into this spring than any other, and that confidence should carry over when Team USA takes the field.
With pool play set to begin this week and the championship game scheduled for March 17 at loanDepot Park in Miami, the stage is set for Witt and the rest of Team USA to bring the title back to the United States for the first time since 2017.
If Witt can play the way he has over the last two seasons while wearing USA across his chest, it could be the moment that takes his career to another level entirely.
