The Kansas City Royals brought in a new pitcher after sending Lucas Erceg down to the minor leagues.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Lucas Erceg has struggled mightily in 2026. Erceg entered the year as the team's set-up man, looking to provide an elite one-two punch alongside closer Carlos Estevez.
Unfortunately, that vision never materialized. Estevez has pitched in just one game this year due to a left foot contusion and right rotator cuff strain. Erceg has not been able to pick up the slack in his absence. In fact, Erceg is having the worst season of his big-league career.
Across 47 appearances, Erceg has posted a 6.23 ERA with just 31 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings while issuing 29 walks, completely losing control of the strike zone.
He has completed just 12 of 18 save attempts this year and has been pitching in lower-leverage situations for weeks now. On Tuesday, the organization made the decision to send him to Triple-A, recalling right-hander Carlos Duran in a corresponding move.
This marks the first time Erceg has ever been optioned in his career. He debuted with the Athletics back in 2023 and had been in the big leagues ever since.
This is Erceg's fourth season. It's his third with the Royals after he was traded to the organization at the 2024 trade deadline. Erceg likely would have been dealt to another club at this year's trade deadline if he was not underperforming.
The hope for Kansas City is that a brief stint in Triple-A will help him rediscover his mechanics and command before potentially returning to contribute later this season or in 2027.
With Erceg gone, Alex Lange and Steven Cruz will likely be called upon to pick up saves, though neither has been particularly reliable this year. The Royals simply do not have many better options available at this stage of the season.
As for Duran, his debut for Kansas City on Tuesday marked just his second appearance in his career. He debuted back in 2025 with the Athletics but allowed three runs and recorded just one out in that lone outing.
Duran was the player acquired in the deal that sent left-hander Kris Bubic to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. This year in the minor leagues he has pitched well across two organizations, posting a 3.15 ERA with 64 strikeouts across 45 2/3 innings.
He should get an extended look given how poorly Kansas City's bullpen has performed this season. With the Royals still looking to bounce back and compete in 2027, restocking the bullpen this offseason will be one of their most pressing priorities.
