The Kansas City Royals may trade away outfielder Lane Thomas.

The Kansas City Royals will be selling at this year's trade deadline. Despite splitting their weekend series against the Detroit Tigers, the club is still 17 games under .500 and far out of the race for an American League wild card spot.

While the Royals will not be doing a full roster teardown, it makes sense for them to move on from expiring contracts that contenders will find value in. One of those players is outfielder Lane Thomas, who could find himself in pinstripes in the coming days.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post indicated that the New York Yankees are looking for a right-handed hitting outfielder. Heyman proceeded to name several options with Thomas on top of the list.

If the Royals were to deal Thomas to the Yankees they would not get back anything too significant in return, but it is better than getting nothing and having Thomas simply walk in the offseason.

Thomas joined the Royals this past offseason on a one-year, $5.25 million prove-it deal. After struggling in 2024 and 2025 with the Cleveland Guardians and battling health concerns, Thomas was looking for a fresh start and has responded well this year while staying healthy and available throughout the season.

Across 91 games, he has posted a .229 batting average, .326 on-base percentage, .717 OPS, nine home runs and 36 RBIs. It has not been enough to make the Royals relevant, but it represents solid production on a team-friendly contract, exactly the kind of value contenders look for when they do not want to sacrifice significant prospect capital at the deadline.

The reason the Yankees specifically need a right-handed hitting outfielder is to gain platoon advantages heading into the postseason. The club is still awaiting the return of both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, leaving the lineup heavily left-handed.

Adding Thomas would open up their flexibility considerably against left-handed pitching in October, which is precisely the kind of depth move a championship-contending team makes before the deadline.

For the Royals, moving on from Thomas makes sense regardless of what they get back. Freeing up playing time for younger outfield options, potentially including prospects like John Rave, is a more productive use of the roster spot than holding onto a rental on a team going nowhere this season.

Thomas may not be the only Royal moved before August. Michael Wacha continues to draw interest from contenders, and the bullpen could also see pieces shipped out for the right return.
