The Kansas City Royals made a roster move on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Royals won their fifth straight game on Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians, continuing one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the 2026 MLB season.

After a brutal start, the Royals have surged back into contention and, entering Wednesday, even have a chance to take over first place in the weak American League Central.

Tuesday’s win came behind right-hander Stephen Kolek, who delivered exactly what Kansas City needed in his first big-league start of the year. The 29-year-old tossed six innings, allowing three runs and striking out three, delivering a quality start at Kauffman Stadium.

Kolek stepped in for Noah Cameron, who was scratched due to lower back tightness. However, despite Kolek’s strong performance, the Royals made a roster move sending him back down a level in the system ahead of Wednesday’s game.

The Royals announced that right-hander Eric Cerantola had been recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Kolek was optioned back down to the minor leagues in a corresponding move.

This decision likely signals two things: first, that Cameron is trending toward making his next scheduled start, and second, that the Royals are not yet ready to commit to Kolek as a full-time rotation piece.

That does not mean this is the last Kansas City will see of him. Kolek remains the next man up and could easily replace Cameron if struggles continue. He also brings meaningful MLB experience, having started 19 games last season, 14 with the San Diego Padres before being traded to Kansas City at the deadline, where he impressed with a 1.91 ERA across five starts.

Still, the Royals needed bullpen help, and that is exactly what Cerantola provides. The 26-year-old was Kansas City’s fifth-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and will make his MLB debut if he appears in a game.

He has spent the last six seasons developing in the minors, posting a 3.59 ERA across 245 2/3 innings with an impressive 326 strikeouts. Cerantola is also off to a dominant start at Triple-A Omaha in 2026, carrying a 1.42 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.

He has experience against high-level competition as well, having suited up for Team Canada in this year’s World Baseball Classic in February.

With the Royals surging and the division lead up for grabs, every roster move matters. Wednesday’s decision reflects a team trying to maximize every available arm and win a sixth straight game.
