Sunday brought the Royals a moment of reality as their winning stretch was halted.
Over the last two weeks, optimism for the direction of the Kansas City Royals’ season had grown exponentially, arguably more than it had all year and for good reason.
Heading into Sunday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians, the Royals had been winners of 12 of their last 13 games, which was easily their best stretch of baseball they have played all year. At a time where their season seemed to be winding down, it brought a level of hope for the team going forward, although the postseason picture remained far out of reach.
That was until Sunday’s game took an unexpected turn early on in the contest.
Kansas City took the first two games of their series against the Guardians with ease, putting themselves in a position to secure a sweep on Sunday. However, with starter Seth Lugo on the mound, the task wouldn’t be easy.
It is no secret that Lugo has been pitching to a standard that most did not expect him to sit at this year. His ERA hovers just over five, and his past couple of months have not been sharp. But Sunday’s outing may have reached a new low.
When Lugo left the mound after he was unable to complete four innings, he put the Royals completely out of reach to win. Lugo allowed a barrage of nine hits for nine earned runs, setting the table for a discouraging 11-1 loss against the Guardians.
While the loss does not definitively put a stamp on the Royals’ hot stretch, it did serve as a memo for what the team needs to fix. It serves as a reality check for Kansas City’s urgency as an organization.
Just two years ago in 2024, Lugo served as the team’s undisputed ace in their first postseason run in nine seasons. But after some clear signs of regression over the past two seasons, the Royals refused to give up on the aging right-hander and opted to retain him through two trade deadlines.
Instead, they opted to sign him to a contract extension in the middle of 2025.
Kansas City has their problem laid out in front of them. Though Lugo has proven to be a productive starting pitcher, age starts to tell the story at a point in time. While moving him could have brought prospect capital, it instead brings them to their problem on Sunday – continuously rolling out a badly struggling starter with intentions to win.
Now with a record of 62-76, the Royals sit 7 ½ games back of an AL Wild Card spot with a month remaining. A lot of ground remains to be made up to put their name in further contention for Kansas City.
