The Royals should look into upgrading at a couple of outfield positions.

After what was a disappointing finish to a season that had higher expectations, the Kansas City Royals know that adjustments have to be made heading into 2027.

One of those struggles in particular came in the outfield, which presented lackluster performances to counter the Royals’ top-heavy lineup. With that in mind, the Royals should explore their possibilities on the free agent market ahead of the new season when the offseason arrives in full swing.

The Royals’ combined production from their left fielders and center fielders in 2026 ranked towards the bottom of the barrel in the league. With Jac Caglianone holding down right field after a breakout campaign this past season, those two positions are the areas that Kansas City should focus on improving.

Though Kansas City did not have the season they hoped for, they saw a lot of encouraging signs from Caglianone and catcher Carter Jensen atop their batting order, playing up to their potential and more. But a middle of the order bat or two to complement those two hitters, along with Bobby Witt Jr., could advance the Royals’ offense even further.

This offseason consists of a wide variety of outfielders that could fit the veteran mold in left field and center field.

LF Randy Arozarena – A Potential Longshot

Arozarena presents himself as undoubtedly the most intriguing left fielder on the market this upcoming offseason, and for good reason. He has consistently posted productive seasons for years on end, while also being known for his big-game energy and heroics.

Adding a bat like his to the top of the Royals' order could be seen as a fever dream, but one that would take the Royals’ lineup a step in the right direction. With the Royals’ prior season being a down year, it may take a solid check to secure Arozarena in Kansas City, but it is an opportunity that the Royals should explore at the very least.

LF Ian Happ – An Intriguing Fit

Happ is set to hit the free agent market for the first time in his career, and it comes after yet another very solid season for the switch-hitting outfielder.

The 32-year-old would bring a veteran presence to a lineup that lacks it, as well as the ability to hit from both sides, which provides a lineup with versatility. Happ has hit over 20 homers in each of the last four seasons, while also being efficient defensively in left field.

LF/CF Ramón Laureano – An Overlooked Outfielder

Laureano missed the majority of the 2026 season after he underwent hip surgery with the San Diego Padres, but found a stride with them prior to that. He was off to a strong start at the plate in 2026 before the hip began to bother him, but had a notable bounceback season the year prior.

The outfielder had the ability to spray the ball to all fields, while continuously being above average defensively. Laureano can play all positions in the outfield.

Taylor Ward – A Bounce-back Candidate

After being dealt to the Seattle Mariners from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline, Ward turned out to be one of the worst trade deadline acquisitions of the year, as his power numbers diminished and his strikeout numbers went up. However, that does not entirely discredit what he has done at the plate in the past.

Ward, who signed with the Orioles on a one-year deal last offseason, would come at a cheaper price with potential of high upside. The power numbers hold weight to be crucial going forward – Ward produced seven homers in 2026 after he hit 36 bombs last year with the Los Angeles Angels.
