The Kansas City Royals received an encouraging sign from one of their most important pitchers during the World Baseball Classic, as veteran starter Seth Lugo delivered a strong outing for Puerto Rico that could signal a bounce‑back season ahead.
Lugo took the mound against Colombia and looked sharp throughout his appearance, tossing four scoreless innings while striking out three hitters. Just as importantly for Kansas City, his fastball velocity appeared strong, a positive indicator that the inconsistencies he dealt with last season may be behind him.
The performance comes during an important stretch for Lugo as he looks to reestablish himself as a frontline starter after an inconsistent 2025 season.
Earlier this spring, Lugo acknowledged he was working to tighten up parts of his game heading into the year.
“This spring, Lugo admitted there were some inconsistencies in his game. So he entered spring training looking to pitch more efficiently,” reported Jaylon T. Thompson of the Kansas City Star.
“That is what I am kind of honing down on this spring,” Lugo said earlier in Royals camp, via Thompson. “I am trying to be a little bit more consistent and help the (Royals) get to the playoffs.”
While Lugo remained a reliable member of Kansas City’s rotation last season, his overall numbers took a step back compared to his dominant 2024 campaign. In 2025, he posted a 4.15 ERA across 145 1/3 innings while recording 125 strikeouts and an 8‑7 record over 26 starts.
Those results were a noticeable drop from the season that came before it. During the 2024 campaign, Lugo emerged as one of the American League’s top pitchers. He earned an All‑Star selection, won a Gold Glove and finished second in the AL Cy Young Award voting. Lugo also appeared on the AL MVP ballot, finishing 15th after anchoring the Royals rotation with a breakout performance.
Despite the slight downturn in 2025, Kansas City showed strong faith in the veteran right‑hander. In July of that season, Lugo finalized a two‑year, $46 million contract extension with the Royals that will keep him with the club through the 2027 season.
That investment makes outings like his World Baseball Classic appearance particularly encouraging for the organization. Seeing Lugo generate strong velocity and command early in the year suggests he could return closer to the form that made him one of the league’s most effective starters just two seasons ago.
If Lugo can carry that momentum from international play back into the regular season, it would provide a significant boost for a Royals team hoping to contend in the American League and push for a playoff berth in 2026.
