The Royals right-hander gave some encouraging thoughts about the Royals.
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Stephen Kolek had one of his best outings of the year on Sunday, tossing 7.1 scoreless innings in a 4-0 win over the Houston Astros at Kauffman Stadium.
The 29-year-old right-hander scattered five hits, struck out four and walked one while throwing 97 pitches against a lineup that featured Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Royals and gave a pitching staff that has been beat up all season a much-needed boost.
After the game, Kolek made it clear that he felt like himself again on the mound.
"I finally felt like I was getting back to myself there," Kolek said. "I filled up the zone with a lot of different pitches and located the fastballs well enough to challenge them in any count in any situation, so I just pounded the zone with all of my stuff."
Sunday's Performance
That kind of command showed up all afternoon.
None of Houston's five hits off Kolek turned into anything real, as two baserunners were erased by double plays and Cam Smith was picked off first.
Kolek improved to 4-1 on the year with a 2.68 ERA through nine starts, and he has allowed just seven earned runs total over his last six outings.
Bobby Witt Jr. celebrated his 26th birthday by going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Maikel Garcia drove in three runs to give Kolek all the run support he needed.
Why Kolek Could Be the X-Factor
The Royals sit at 29-43 and last in the AL Central, a far cry from the team that made the postseason in 2024 and went 82-80 last season.
The rotation has been gutted by injuries with Seth Lugo on the IL with a concussion, Cole Ragans on the 15-day IL and Kris Bubic also sidelined.
That has forced Kansas City to lean on Kolek to keep the ship from sinking, and he has responded by becoming one of the steadiest arms on the roster.
Since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the 2025 Trade Deadline, Kolek has quietly built a strong body of work in Kansas City.
He closed last year with five straight quality starts and has carried that momentum into 2026 by mixing his four-seam fastball, changeup and cutter to keep hitters off balance.
Opponents have posted just a .283 wOBA against him this season and his ability to throw strikes and limit hard contact has made him exactly the type of innings-eater a short-handed rotation needs.
The Royals need someone to step into a bigger role while their top arms are on the shelf, and Sunday was proof that Kolek is more than ready for that challenge.
If he can keep pitching like this, Kansas City might just have an answer hiding in plain sight.
