Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. is off to a scorching hot start in spring training. Some players -- even superstars -- need some time to find their rhythm. Through two games, though, Witt already looks like he's in mid-season form.
Of course, Witt has been preparing for the season longer than some other position players since he is participating in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. In all reality, it probably seems like he's already a few games in as opposed to just two contests.
Nevertheless, Witt is playing well through the Royals' first two spring training games. Kansas City won the spring opener on Friday over the Texas Rangers 7-3. Witt picked up an RBI and a triple in the game.
On Saturday, the Royals were defeated 10-3 by the San Diego Padres. Despite the loss, Witt went 1-2. He once again had a respectable performance.
Overall, the shortstop is hitting .400 with a 1.200 OPS to begin the spring. He's only had five at-bats, but Witt is clearly ready for the new campaign. However, he is not the only Royals player who is swinging the bat well so far.
Veteran catcher Salvador Perez is also hitting .400 across five at-bats. Perez has recorded a 1.600 OPS and a home run as well.
Kansas City's stars are playing up to their potential. Yes, it has only been two games in spring training. There is no reason for overreactions. With that being said, it is always encouraging to see strong performances.
Witt has emerged as one of MLB's superstars. He has become one of the best young players in the sport. Witt could end up winning his first MVP this year.
Yet, Witt is not as popular as some other superstars in the game. Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani are known by even non-baseball fans, while there are some casual fans who may not be as familiar with Witt.
That will change soon, though. Most casual fans tend to watch the WBC. With Witt handling shortstop duties for Team USA, he will have an opportunity to shine. He could play a similar role to that of Trea Turner in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
For now, Witt is focused on spring training and preparing for the new campaign. Before too long, though, he will be preparing for the 2026 WBC.
