The Kansas City Royals earned an impressive 7-3 spring training win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. While wins and losses do not mean anything in spring training, it was a strong performance by the ball club nonetheless. The game also sparked two intriguing questions.
Bailey Falter started the contest and performed well. The southpaw turned in two scoreless innings of work, allowing only one hit along the way. Meanwhile, Jac Caglianone continued to display his high ceiling with a 1-2 day at the plate. The outfielder added a walk as well.
So, is Falter going to land in the starting rotation? Is Caglianone destined for a huge 2026 campaign?
Today, we will attempt to answer those questions.
Cole Ragans is the ace of the Royals' starting rotation. Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha and Kris Bubic are also likely to have rotation spots. Noah Cameron is a strong candidate for the No. 5 spot, which leaves Falter's role in question.
Falter, 28, was acquired by Kansas City from the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2025 season. He made 26 total appearances between Kansas City and Pittsburgh last year, 24 of which were starts. With the Royals, however, Falter pitched in four total games and recorded two starts.
It seems as if Falter will pitch in a long relief role in 2026. It is difficult to completely rule out the idea of him starting, though. Either way, he will make an impact this year.
We are not overreacting to a 1-2 performance. Caglianone has been mentioned as a popular breakout candidate. His early spring training performance only further cements his poise and potential.
Caglianone, 23, made his MLB debut in 2025 and appeared in 62 games. He struggled in MLB, hitting just .157. Despite the underwhelming first cup of coffee at the MLB level, Caglianone is still clearly ready for the show.
Caglianone hit .337/.408/.617 across 66 total minor league contests between Double-A and Triple-A last year. He added 20 home runs.
So, is Caglianone destined to have a big 2026 campaign? He will enter 2026 with more time to prepare for the MLB level. The outfielder will likely feel more comfortable with the Royals as a result. His talent is undeniable and the potential is unquestionably present.
There is reason to believe that Jac Caglianone will meet the lofty expectations and ultimately end up having a breakout 2026 MLB season.
