The player could take a step forward in 2026.
The Kansas City Royals feature a number of stars on the roster. There is one specific player who has played in Kansas City since 2021, but he rarely receives much attention. Outfielder Kyle Isbel has had his ups and downs over the years, but perhaps 2026 will be his breakout campaign.
Kyle Isbel is a Breakout Candidate
Isbel, 29, is a career .239/.289/.367 hitter. He's also never hit more than eight home runs in a single season. Through just three games in 2026, however, Isbel is hitting .400 with a 1.100 OPS and a home run. He's also never stolen more than 11 bases in a single campaign, but Isbel already has two this year.
Sure, Isbel's breakout may not mean he will become a superstar. He probably won't even be an All-Star unless he truly shatters expectations. Isbel could potentially reach 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases, though. If he accomplishes that feat while hitting for a respectable average and playing quality outfield defense, that would lead to a breakout season for the 29-year-old.
It has only been a few contests of course. Still, Isbel has displayed signs of potential in the past. The Royals moved the outfield fences in this past offseason as well, so that should help Isbel from a home run standpoint.
How Isbel Fits With Royals
Isbel hits toward the bottom of the Royals' lineup. He handles duties in center field and consistently plays on a regular basis.
He will not receive much overall recognition, but Kansas City values his skill set. Isbel comes to the field ready to play and make an impact consistently.
The left-handed hitter is a guy who can help matters at the bottom of the batting order. Simply getting on base and setting the table for the top of the lineup is crucial.
Defensively, Isbel ranked in the 97th percentile in outs above average a season ago. He does not have a great throwing arm and he was just above average from a sprint speed standpoint last year, but Isbel is a reliable option at a premier position in the outfield.
He is not a bad player by any means. Isbel is trending toward finding better overall results, though.
So, will Kyle Isbel break out this year? Only time will tell. Regardless of whether or not he takes a step forward, the veteran outfielder will continue to make a true impact for this Royals ball club.
