Carter Jensen may already be one of the best catchers in MLB.
Carter Jensen just had a breakout season, and the argument for putting him in the top five at his position is more legitimate than it might seem on the surface.
Jensen finished the year with a .239 batting average, .323 on-base percentage, .790 OPS, 27 home runs and 81 RBIs across 149 games for the Kansas City Royals. After showing his potential in 20 games during the 2025 season, he proved it was not a fluke in 2026.
He is already way above the league average at a position where offensive production is hard to find consistently. He is also still just 23 years old. He entered the season expected to share time with Salvador Perez behind the plate.
Instead, Jensen ended up as one of the more productive catchers in the American League and took over for Perez entirely in the second half. That is partly because of Perez's injury issues, but Jensen was clearly the better player both defensively and in the lineup.
The top of the catcher rankings is up for debate, and Jensen has a legitimate case for being top five. William Contreras, Alejandro Kirk and Gabriel Moreno all had strong seasons and are probably ahead of him right now.
Cal Raleigh and Will Smith are two of the better catchers in baseball, but Raleigh hit .182 with a .664 OPS in 2026 and Smith played only 73 games. Jensen was much better than both in 2026.
Dillon Dingler had a better year than Jensen defensively and deserves his spot in the conversation too, but Jensen's offensive output was the stronger of the two in 2026.
The case against Jensen is simple. He has only done it for one year. That is a legitimate reason to pump the brakes on a top-five ranking. But it cuts both ways. Jensen likely has not reached his ceiling yet.
If this is the floor, the conversation changes significantly. If Raleigh and Smith bounce back, Jensen probably sits just outside the top five. If they struggle again, the argument moves up. Either way, he earned his spot in the conversation.
But the honest answer heading out of 2026 is that Jensen belongs in the discussion. If Raleigh and Smith bounce back next season, he probably slots in at six or seven. If they struggle again, the argument for Jensen inside the top five gets much easier to make. He earned that much with what he did this year.
