The Kansas City Royals could solve their outfield problems by adding Ian Happ.

The Kansas City Royals have outfield problems and they could answer them with impending free agent Ian Happ. The question is whether they can agree on a deal that makes sense for both sides.

Happ has spent his entire career with the Chicago Cubs and is hitting free agency for the first time after his contract expires this offseason. The 32-year-old is a switch-hitter who plays left field and has been one of the more consistently productive players in the National League for most of the last decade.

He has posted at least 3 bWAR in four of his last five seasons. He has also won a Gold Glove Award in four straight seasons and has the potential to earn the honor a fifth time in November.

Jackson Chourio’s strong year in left field may push him out of contention this time around. Either way, Happ’s glove has been one of the more underrated parts of his game throughout his career, and it will factor into what teams are willing to offer this winter.

The 2026 season is where the conversation gets more complicated. He hit .218 with 24 home runs, 81 walks and a .738 OPS in 156 games. The power and plate discipline were still there.

But he struck out 189 times and the average was a meaningful step back. His .738 OPS came in notably below his .783 career mark. One down year does not erase what he built, but it is slightly concerning for any team thinking about a multi-year commitment.

Kansas City finished 69-93, fifth in the AL Central, and their combined production in left and center field ranked near the bottom of the league.

They have Jac Caglianone locked in at right field after a breakout season, and Bobby Witt Jr. and Carter Jensen in the mix. They need more bats around those guys, and Happ fits the profile.

The Royals also have other needs. Their rotation was awful. Cole Ragans is recovering from elbow surgery and multiple other starters are also dealing with significant injuries. Spending big on one outfielder could crowd out moves elsewhere on a roster with several holes to fill.

There are cheaper alternatives on the market. They could bring Lane Thomas back on another one-year deal. Taylor Ward is another bounce-back candidate who costs less. The Royals should have Happ on the board, but only at a price that reflects 2026 rather than his peak.
