The right-hander has recorded a 2.54 ERA and 43 strikeouts since the Kansas City Royals acquired him in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in June.

Randy Dobnak has made a case for himself this season since the Kansas City Royals acquired him from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations on June 17.

Although the Royals have little chance at making the MLB postseason with their 64-80 overall record and fifth-place ranking in the AL Central, Dobnak is turning out to be a great find by general manager J.J. Picollo.

On Sunday, the 31-year-old propelled Kansas City to a commanding 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays as he struck out three batters while only giving up a single earned run through six innings pitched. While the punchouts were low, his effectiveness at inducing weak contact shined when the Blue Jays' bats flied out five times.

Dobnak put up another decent start against the Athletics on Aug. 20, giving the Royals the momentum they needed to take a 6-2 win in front of the Kauffman Stadium-faithful.

Furthermore, he dominated against another one of his former teams in the division rival Minnesota Twins earlier that month, only yielding three hits and one run in comparison to ace Joe Ryan who coughed up seven hits and four earned runs.

Prior to landing with Kansas City, Dobnak only pitched 5.1 innings last season for Minnesota who designated him for assignment despite a solid relief outing on March 30 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Meanwhile, he never saw any major-league reps as a Mariner, spending his time with Triple-A Tacoma where he went 5-5 with a 4.24 ERA through 13 starts before eventually triggering the upward mobility clause in his contract that forced Seattle into deciding whether to keep him on their 40-man roster or ship him off to another team.

Evidently, Dobnak's decision paid off with him earning his first big-league win since 2021 in late July against the Twins. He also showed resiliency against the San Diego Padres on July 18, surrendering just one earned run even when he allowed four hits and four walks.

Dobnak has also become a noticeable clubhouse presence that caught the attention of Vinnie Pasquantino who praised his performance on the field as well as the positive energy he regularly carries.

"He sinks it. He slides it. He sweeps it. He does all of it," Pasquantino said of Dobnak, according to MLB.com. "He’s been a great addition. He’s great in the clubhouse. It’s cool to take the field with him."

Dobnak should get his next opportunity to contribute during the Royals' upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox later in the week.

In the meantime, Kansas City will have their sights set on securing a series win over the Arizona Diamondbacks starting this afternoon.
