Boasting elite power and five Gold Gloves, the Royals legend faces a statistical uphill climb. Discover why reaching the 2,000-hit milestone remains the final key to Cooperstown.

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has had a legendary career. Not only has he been one of the more likable players in the league, but over the last 15 years, he’s been one of the better, more impactful catchers in the league. When you list them off, Perez appears next to names like JT Realmuto, Buster Posey, Yadier Molina, and a couple of others.

His career has had some ups and downs; his impact at the plate has slipped, and the Royals haven’t had the success they had compared to during the prime of his career.

So, where does that put him in terms of his Hall-of-Fame resume? Right now, it could be a coin flip. Furthermore, it could come down to his last season, which could very well be 2027, for him to have a real case.

When you compare his numbers to other catchers in the Hall of Fame, his numbers are lacking in just about every category. He’s on the lower end in average, currently having a .261 clip. His WAR is 35.2, which is also on the lower end. Perez would also be one of the few catchers who played after the 1970s in the Hall of Fame who have not surpassed 2,000 hits. His power numbers, which sit at 318 home runs, show he is one of the better home run-hitting catchers in the league’s history. He recently passed George Brett to become the Royals' All-time home run leader.

Perez could seal his entry into the Hall of Fame if he can surpass 2,000 hits and claim that milestone. He would join players like Johnny Bench, Ivan Rodriguez, Carlton Fisk, and Mike Piazza to reach that many hits. All of those names are undoubtedly Hall of Famers.

Perez has 1,806 hits as of August 14, 2026. The most hits he’s ever recorded in a single season is 169 in 2021 when he made the All-Star Game. He needs 34 more hits in 39 remaining games in 2026 to put himself within striking distance.

What Perez does have under his belt is five Gold Gloves, 9 All-Star appearances, five Silver Sluggers, and a World Series MVP in 2015. There is a chance he can get to 2,000 hits, which would require him to come back in 2027 and be healthy.

Perez is truly at a coin flip today on whether he will make the Hall of Fame. His entry into the Hall would mean a lot to Royals fans, as he was a great player who spent his entire career in Kansas City.
