Detroit Tigers Blow Another Big Lead in Walk-Off Loss
Sep 4, 2026 10:06 PM

A five-run cushion evaporated in an instant after Brayan Rocchio’s stunning grand slam silenced Detroit, setting the stage for a crushing late-inning collapse against the Guardians.

Another day, another heartbreaking Tigers loss.

What started as a dominant offensive performance quickly turned into another frustrating collapse for Detroit, as the Tigers watched a five-run lead disappear before ultimately falling to the Cleveland Guardians, 7-6, on a walk-off home run.

Detroit jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Cleveland erased the deficit in the fourth inning, tying the game at six. After that, the two teams battled back and forth until one final swing gave the Guardians the win.

The Tigers and Guardians will meet again Friday night in the second game of the doubleheader, with Cleveland carrying all the momentum after stealing Game 1.

First Inning: Hitting Dominance

The first inning was a delight for the Detroit Tigers.

All nine Tigers hitters came to the plate, and Detroit wasted little time putting pressure on Cleveland's pitching.

Gleyber Torres singled and Kevin McGonigle walked to begin the game. After two quick outs, however, the early excitement began to fade.

Then Riley Greene stepped to the plate and delivered a crucial walk to load the bases.

Detroit still hadn't scored, and considering how inconsistent the offense had been at times, there was a sense that the Tigers needed to capitalize.

The youth movement came through once again.

Ben Malgeri delivered a two-run single, giving Detroit an early 2-0 advantage and bringing his season RBI total to 13.

Spencer Torkelson followed with a single to keep the inning alive. He hit a hard ball toward left field, but it was caught for the third out before another run could score.

That left the bases loaded once again, and rookie Max Clark made sure Detroit wouldn't leave empty-handed.

Clark ripped a hard shot into right field that brought home two more runs, giving him his 15th and 16th RBIs of the season. He also now has six RBIs over his last nine games.

Just like that, Detroit had a 4-0 lead.

Cleveland attempted to answer in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on first and third against Tigers starter Keider Montero.

Montero managed to limit the damage, allowing only a sacrifice fly before getting the final two outs. Dillon Dingler also provided a huge moment behind the plate, challenging a ball four call that was overturned into a strike three to end the inning.

Detroit led 4-1, and everything seemed to be going right.

Fourth Inning: Right Back Where We Started

By the fourth inning, the Tigers had added two more runs, including a solo home run from Torkelson for his 22nd of the season.

Detroit had built a 6-1 advantage, but that lead quickly disappeared.

Three hits and a walk allowed Cleveland to cut the deficit to 6-2 while loading the bases with just one out.

Brayan Rocchio then stepped to the plate and delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon.

Rocchio launched his 11th home run of the season over the fence for a game-tying grand slam.

In the blink of an eye, the Guardians had erased a five-run deficit.

The game was tied 6-6, and the Tigers were once again left watching a massive lead disappear.

Bottom of the Ninth: Call It a Day

After the game remained tied at six through the late innings, Detroit turned to Drew Sommers in the bottom of the ninth with hopes of sending the game to extra innings.

He never got the chance.

On the very first pitch of the inning, Sommers threw a ball high and toward the outside corner. It was actually a well-placed pitch, but Rocchio was simply having that kind of day.

The Guardians' hero crushed it over the fence for his second home run of the game, giving Cleveland a 7-6 walk-off victory.

Just like that, a game in which Detroit led 6-1 ended in heartbreak.

The Tigers will have an opportunity to bounce back Friday night when the two teams meet again in the second game of the doubleheader. But after Cleveland's dramatic comeback and walk-off win, it will be the Guardians entering Game 2 with the momentum.
