Despite a stinging title loss, Detroit’s future shines through Zyhir Hope’s elite power. The top prospect’s explosive Double-A debut headlines a surging wave of Tigers talent.
Erie’s season came to an end Tuesday night with a 13-4 loss to Reading in the Eastern League championship game, with a close game getting away from the SeaWolves in the middle innings.
The SeaWolves got the start they wanted. Peyton Graham opened the game with a walk before Zyhir Hope hit a two-run home run to right-center field to give Erie a 2-0 lead. Hope later walked in the fifth and scored when Thayron Liranzo reached on a throwing error, putting Erie back in front, 3-2.
It fell apart in the sixth inning. Reading loaded the bases against Lucas Elissalt before Colin Fields entered and walked Carson DeMartini to tie the game. Caleb Ricketts followed with a grand slam, and Reading scored five runs in the inning to take an 8-3 lead. Reading added another run in the seventh and four in the eighth, including another grand slam from DeMartini. E.J. Exposito homered in the ninth for Erie’s final run.
For Tigers fans, however, Hope’s home run provided another look at one of the players who could become much more important to the organization in 2027.
Hope finished his first season in the Tigers organization after coming over from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade. Across his two stops this season, he hit .287/.367/.513 with 29 home runs, 111 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. The strikeout rate was still 25%, but he also walked in 11% of his plate appearances. That combination of power, patience and athleticism explains why MLB Pipeline currently ranks Hope as Detroit’s No. 1 prospect with an estimated 2027 arrival.
The postseason at-bats in Erie also mattered. Hope is only 21 years old and was getting his first look at Double-A pitching, so there is still development left before Detroit has to make any decisions with him. The Tigers do not need to rush it. MLB.com recently noted that Hope is unlikely to be ready at the beginning of 2027 but could potentially factor into Detroit’s outfield picture later in the season.
Hope will not be the only prospect worth following next year.
Josue Briceño should be near the top of that list. The 21-year-old has already reached Triple-A and is currently ranked fourth in Detroit’s system by MLB Pipeline with a 2027 estimated arrival. His left-handed power has been one of his calling cards throughout his climb through the system, and MLB Pipeline gives both Briceño and Hope 60 grades for power.
Bryce Rainer could be part of the next group arriving in Erie. The Tigers’ 2024 first-round pick reached High-A this season and is currently ranked second in the organization. There are still swing-and-miss questions to work through, but Rainer has the combination of power, arm strength and defensive ability that has kept him near the top of Detroit’s prospect rankings. If his development continues next season, Double-A should eventually provide a much better test of where the bat stands.
Elissalt is another name worth keeping around. His championship outing did not go the way he wanted, but he reached Double-A this season at just 22 years old. MLB Pipeline rated his curveball as the best in Detroit’s system at midseason with a 60 grade. That pitch, along with how his command and secondary stuff develop, will make him one of the more interesting arms to monitor heading into next year.
Liranzo also remains part of the discussion. The switch-hitting catcher has already spent considerable time at Double-A, and FanGraphs has continued to recognize the raw power in his profile, grading it as a future 60. The question remains how consistently that power translates against upper-level pitching and where his defensive home eventually lands.
There will obviously be roster movement between now and Opening Day. Some players currently in Erie will move to Toledo, while another group will come up behind them from West Michigan and Lakeland.
That is what made Hope’s home run Tuesday a useful ending point for Erie’s season. The championship game itself did not go the SeaWolves’ way, but Hope gave Tigers fans another look at a player who could be knocking on the major league door sometime next season.
Erie has become an important stop in evaluating Detroit’s prospects because Double-A tends to expose what still needs work. In 2027, Hope, Briceño, Rainer, Elissalt, Liranzo and the next group moving through the organization will give Tigers fans plenty more to watch.
