After an agonizing slump, Detroit faces a brutal gauntlet against baseball’s elite. The Tigers must rediscover their midsummer magic—and overcome former ace Tarik Skubal—to keep their postseason dreams alive.
It’s now or never for the 2026 Detroit Tigers.
The addition of the seventh MLB team to make the playoffs has done exactly what the league had hoped for: spread hope throughout extra cities across the nation as fans cheer on their team, no matter the record.
Detroit is the epitome of that this year.
Tigers fans have watched their team endure some of the lowest lows an MLB franchise can face. Winning just six games during the month of May basically cut off both of Detroit’s legs. However, much like the knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Tigers, despite having no limbs left, were still ready to put up a fight.
And fight they did.
Detroit crawled all the way back into sole possession of the final American League Wild Card spot just over a week ago.
However, since then, the Tigers have dropped eight of their last nine games and were swept by two divisional opponents: the division-leading Chicago White Sox and the division-cellar-dwelling Kansas City Royals. Detroit also dropped two of three against Pittsburgh sandwiched in between.
Now, the Tigers sit 3.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot with just 32 games remaining.
Of those 32 games, the next six may be the most important stretch of Detroit’s season. The Tigers will host two of baseball’s best teams in the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays and National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
That stretch will include an August 29 matchup against the very same Tarik Skubal who won two Cy Young Awards over the last two seasons with Detroit before Scott Harris moved him to Los Angeles at this year’s trade deadline.
First up are the Rays, the same Tampa Bay team the Tigers swept to kick off the month of June and begin their epic comeback from the dead.
So, Detroit knows it can play well against the Rays. But with the speed at which the offense is currently producing, the Tigers will need to find another resurgence similar to the one they had when they faced Tampa Bay’s pitching in June.
Then comes a matchup with the surging Dodgers, who have won six consecutive games.
That series will feature what could be the most anticipated game of the season for Tigers fans, with the hype surrounding a player wearing the other team’s uniform. Skubal’s return to Detroit will undoubtedly be emotional, but the Tigers cannot afford to let the moment distract from what is at stake.
Detroit has to pull it together against two of the top teams in baseball if it wants to remain in the Wild Card race.
It’s basically playoff mode now for the Tigers, but the offense is hitting like it’s spring training.
Spencer Torkelson hasn’t recorded a hit since August 14. Dillon Dingler, who was once finding himself in MVP conversations, has recorded just four base hits since August 7.
It has been a rough stretch for Detroit, and unfortunately, it is not getting any easier.
Tigers fans are holding their breath and hoping another miracle can happen. But is the hole created by that disastrous month of May simply too deep to dig out of?
This week could truly tell the story.
Six games at home against the Rays and Dodgers. Two of the best teams in baseball. Just 32 games remaining and very little room left for error.
For the Detroit Tigers, it is now or never.
