With Gleyber Torres departing, Detroit must choose between rising rookie Hao-Yu Lee, utility man Colt Keith, or a Triple-A breakout to anchor the middle infield in 2027.
As we sit and watch the final four teams duke it out for a trip to the October Classic, the other 26 teams must now start diving deep into their rosters to figure out a plan of attack so they can avoid being in the same spot next season.
For the Detroit Tigers, some areas look refined and ready to get right back at it next season, while others will be a hot topic of conversation this offseason.
One of those areas is second base. Gleyber Torres, who manned the position for the Tigers over the past few years but dealt with injuries this season, is heading out of town and into free agency.
For Detroit, that doesn't come as a shock or a major hit to the team. As good as Torres was for the Tigers and as much as he helped them get to the playoffs, his decline and injury-riddled 2026 season seemed to exhaust any belief that he would return to Detroit and become the player he once was.
What it does do, though, is open the door even wider for the current group of Tigers who helped fill in for Torres throughout the season.
Hao-Yu Lee Could Be the Answer
Mostly, that spot went to Hao-Yu Lee. The rookie infielder played 765 innings this year, with 490 coming at second base, 270 at third base and two at shortstop.
Lee's bat proved to be clutch and consistent. Finishing the season with a .264 batting average and 10 home runs, there's still room for him to grow. However, with a full offseason to prepare, Lee should be able to step right in as the everyday second baseman next season.
Colt Keith's Role Moving Forward
After Lee, there's Colt Keith, a fan favorite who started very slowly in 2026 but put together a very good second half of the season after hitting his first home run in early June.
Oddly enough, Keith did not log a single inning at second base last season. Despite that, he has still logged more than 55% of his career innings at the position.
Keith played 537 innings in 2026, with 420 coming at third base and the rest at first base. Last season, Keith also played just over 500 innings. Unless something clicks this offseason, he has pretty much locked himself in as a utility man moving forward.
Max Anderson Waiting in the Wings
Then there's Max Anderson, who spent the 2026 season at Triple-A Toledo. Anderson hit .302 in 482 plate appearances while crushing 15 home runs.
Anderson will be 25 years old by the time next season begins and will make a legitimate argument for a spot on the roster coming out of spring training.
Will the Tigers Look to Free Agency?
If none of these options pique your interest, the Tigers can always look at the free-agent market, although that seems extremely unlikely given the way Scott Harris likes to build his team.
Still, players such as Jazz Chisholm Jr., Brandon Lowe, Luis Arraez and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will draw serious attention from clubs around the league.
So the question looms: Will the Tigers stand pat with the talent they already have, or will they spend money to add power and a consistent hitting presence to a team that seems a bit desperate for just that?
