By swapping an elite ace for high-ceiling prospects like Zyhir Hope, Detroit gambled on a sustainable future while Los Angeles’ postseason push crumbled without a title.
Tarik Skubal and the Los Angeles Dodgers were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers, bringing their season to an early end as they fell short of their quest for a third consecutive World Series title.
The Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers a couple of days before the trade deadline, receiving three key prospects in return, including two players expected to make a significant impact on the Tigers in the near future.
One of those prospects, River Ryan, is a 27-year-old pitcher who immediately became one of Detroit's top three prospects after arriving in the organization. He was quickly pushed into action, making his way to the mound for the Tigers late in the season.
Ryan started two games for Detroit, pitching 4.1 innings with a 4.15 ERA. While his initial numbers weren't eye-popping, he is expected to compete for a rotation spot, if not secure one, heading into next season.
The biggest prospect to come over in the trade was outfielder Zyhir Hope. In 2026, Hope hit .287 while adding a jaw-dropping 29 home runs.
Hope could eventually join Max Clark and Riley Greene in Detroit's outfield, giving the Tigers another exciting young player to build around. He has a legitimate chance to make the team out of spring training next season, although his age could lead the organization to keep him in the minors for the first half of the year.
The Tigers now have future talent waiting in the wings with Hope and Ryan, while the Dodgers received a half-season of Skubal before falling short in the postseason.
Los Angeles also failed to reach an extension with Skubal, who will enter free agency this offseason and command a massive contract. That financial reality is a big reason Detroit traded him when it did rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency.
With promising prospects now in Detroit's system, the Tigers can look toward the future while the Dodgers join 27 other teams watching the postseason from home.
So, did Detroit win the trade?
I think so.
If Los Angeles had won the World Series with Skubal, the conversation would look a lot different. But that didn't happen, and now the potential value of the players Detroit acquired remains something the Tigers can continue to develop for years to come.
Only time will tell where Skubal signs this offseason. It would be foolish to rule out the Dodgers as a leading destination, but his next contract won't change what happened at the trade deadline. The Dodgers' end of the trade is over, while Detroit's return is just beginning to develop.
Now, the real fun begins: Will Chris Ilitch spend more than anyone expects and make a run at bringing Skubal back to Detroit after trading away two of the organization's top three prospects?
The Tigers have a chance to turn this trade into something special. Whether they ultimately get the last laugh will depend on what Ryan and Hope become — and whether Detroit is willing to spend big when the opportunity to bring Skubal home presents itself.
